Joe Theismann to be 2011 IRE keynote speaker

Hanley Wood LLC has announced Super Bowl champion quarterback Joe Theismann will be the keynote speaker for the 2011 International Roofing Expo® (IRE), which will be held Feb. 16-18, 2011, in Las Vegas.

The keynote address, "Game Plan for Success," will discuss how the lessons Theismann learned on the field helped him succeed in the business world; his strategies for succeeding under pressure and adapting quickly to unexpected situations; and how goals, attitude, confidence, teamwork, motivation and relationships with others affect one's ability to succeed.

In addition, the Renewable Energy Pavilion will be introduced during the 2011 IRE. The pavilion, a designated area on the show floor, will provide green/eco-friendly, solar, photovoltaic, vegetative, roof-mounted wind turbines, day lighting and geothermal products, among other renewable energy products. Additionally, exhibitors will give 30-minute educational presentations on the show floor.

The Renewable Energy Pavilion is free for all registered attendees and open daily during the IRE.

NRCA offers free software

NRCA now offers a free edition of BuildSite Submittals to members. The software, created by BuildSite LLC, Oakland, Calif., allows users to create electronic project submittals tied directly to construction specifications.

BuildSite's product and technical information database is available through the NRCA Roofing Industry Product Center at www.nrca.net/rp/buildsite. The database contains more than 20,000 construction products from more than 350 manufacturers. Visitors can access more than 20 document types, including product data, material safety data sheets, installation details, testing reports and green data, among others.

Free fall-protection training

NRCA's free online training program, Fall Protection for New Roofing Workers, is designed for roofing and construction workers. Participants receive introductory safety training addressing fall hazard identification and remediation.

Fall Protection for New Roofing Workers consists of three modules: Introduction to Fall Protection for New Roofing Workers; Low-slope Fall Protection for New Roofing Workers; and Steep-slope Fall Protection for New Roofing Workers.

Each module lasts about 20 minutes and uses photos, graphics and video clips to illustrate concepts and teach workers at all reading levels. The modules are available in English and Spanish.

NRCA releases NRCA On-Demand

NRCA has released NRCA On-Demand, a web-based service that allows NRCA members to view more than 200 NRCA publications electronically, purchase hard copies of NRCA products, and register for NRCA University online programs and live educational seminars. Archived electronic NRCA publications and videos valued up to $4,500 also are included within NRCA On-Demand.

When a member purchases NRCA On-Demand, he or she can select an account that includes 100 or 200 NRCA points. Points can be used to purchase hard copies of NRCA products and pay tuition for NRCA University's online and live programs. Additional points may be purchased at any time.

NRCA members also can give their key employees access to resources made available through NRCA On-Demand. The number of users per account depends on the member's membership level.

The center announces award winner

The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing has announced the winner of its 2010 Excellence in Design Award for Overall Innovation: the National Great Rivers Research & Education Field Station.

The field station in Alton, Ill., is owned by Lewis & Clark Community College. Its mission is to advance knowledge of environmental issues affecting the Mississippi River and other major river systems around the world. The field station's fully vegetated roof system was designed by Forsight Services Inc., Highland, Ill., under the direction of project architect AAIC Inc., Collinsville, Ill. Guide addresses employee misclassification

The National Roofing Legal Resource Center's guide for roofing contractors—Ensuring Your Independent Contractors are Not Classified by the Government as Employees—addresses employee misclassification with a focus on legal issues and provides recommendations to mitigate the risk and corresponding liability that may arise if independent contractors are found to be employees by state or federal regulations.

NRCA membership directory available

NRCA's 2010-11 NRCA Membership Directory is available. The directory lists NRCA contractor members in alphabetical order and by geographic region. All other NRCA member categories are organized alphabetically. The directory also contains a catalog section with all NRCA resources listed by category.

All current NRCA members receive a free copy of the directory as a membership benefit.

NRCA webinar addresses OSHA's new crane standard

NRCA's webinar recording, How the New OSHA Crane Standard Affects You, is available online in the NRCA Bookstore.

In the one-hour webinar, Harry Dietz, NRCA's director of risk management, addresses the information necessary to comply with the crane standard, including a review of the standard, the equipment it pertains to and personnel who may be affected by it, as well as how the new rule affects local crane licensing and certification laws.

NRCA sells products in electronic format

Most NRCA Bookstore products now can be purchased in an electronic format.

When a user purchases an electronic version of an NRCA product, it remains on the user's account on NRCA's website. Users will be required to log in to view their products. Electronic versions also feature a table of contents; a keyword search option; and the ability to print one page at a time.
