After a training session, when you ask participants how it was, their immediate responses often are that it was boring or fun or went by quickly.
This is important. People want to do more of what they enjoy and less of what they do not. To this end, making training fun is a worthwhile aim. However, it is not the reason for training or for creating engaging training.
The reason we train is to ensure behavior is what we want it to be. We want people to work safely or to do things in a specific way. No matter how fun the training is, if these objectives are not met, the training was not good—even if people enjoyed themselves.
The real reason for engagement is learning. People retain exponentially more of what they do than what they see or hear. Lectures, reading, videos, demos—all of these are valuable learning experiences; however, retention of these activities by themselves is low. When you add in anything trainees need to do, retention will skyrocket.
Most roofing trainers facilitate hands-on practice, but you also should consider the following methods:
Each of these methods requires participants to think differently about the information they have received during the training, which will help them more deeply incorporate it into their memories.
