Three things to know before starting your training session

As a trainer, you obviously need to know your content to prepare for a training session. You do not need to be the most knowledgeable or most skilled to be a great trainer, but you do need to grasp the content well enough to convey or facilitate a good learning experience.

There are three other essential components to focus on before starting your training session, including:

  • Prepare yourself. Review your content and training plan. Get a good night’s sleep, eat well and do whatever else you need to do to feel good physically, mentally and emotionally.
  • Prepare your materials. Materials could include handouts; mockups; tools and equipment; flip charts and props; and laptop, projector, PowerPoints and power supplies.
  • Know your trainees. Although you cannot prepare your trainees, you can know who you are expecting, including their existing skill levels; experience in the industry and with the task at hand; and demographics, including language preferences and abilities.

If you are prepared before entering a training session, you are setting yourself—and everyone in your class—up for success.
