Does it matter if I love my work?

Most of us do not love all aspects of our work; however, those who love at least a portion of their work will be more engaged and may be better at their jobs than those who don’t love a portion of their work.

Researcher and author Marcus Buckingham says the two most discriminating questions to separate high-performing and low-performing employees are: Do you use your strengths every day at work? And were you excited to go to work every day last week?

There is a frequency and an everydayness to finding love in what you do, Buckingham explains. You do not have to love all you do, but if there is no love in your work, you won’t be creative, innovative or resilient.

Buckingham says if 20% of your daily activities are things you love, you are far less likely to burn out, leave your employer and have negative outcomes of lost workdays, among other benefits.

When we train, we should not make it all about skill development. Let’s train people to recognize their strengths and figure out ways to incorporate them into their work.
