Construction jobs were added in 23 states from December 2024 to January

Twenty-three states added construction jobs in January, according to Associated General Contractors of America. Thirty-four states and Washington, D.C., added construction jobs during the past year.

“While two-thirds of the states added construction jobs over the past year, gains were much less widespread recently,” said AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson. “Some of the job losses in January may be due to bad weather, but many owners have paused projects in the face of rising uncertainty about funding and tariffs.”

Utah added the most construction jobs from December 2024 to January—3,300—and Idaho had the largest percentage increase of construction jobs for the month—4%. During the past 12 months, Texas added the most construction jobs—19,800—and Idaho had the largest percentage increase—11.1%.

Florida lost the largest number of construction jobs (-5,100) for the month and Arkansas had the largest percentage decline (-1.6%). During the past 12 months, California lost the most construction jobs (-27,600) and Massachusetts had the largest percentage decline (-3.9%).
