The guide also provides generally accepted guidelines for the application of common roof coatings and roof coating systems to various roof surfaces.

The NRCA Green Roof Systems Manual—2007 Edition provides in-depth technical information regarding the design and installation of quality green roof systems. The manual's focus is waterproofing aspects of green roof systems. Additionally, the manual provides limited information about green roof system components that are not waterproofing-related, such as growth medium, filter fabric and reservoir layer.

The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems—2007, the first in a four-part series of publications intended to update and supercede The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual, Fifth Edition, provides in-depth information about the design, materials and installation of membrane roof systems commonly used for low-slope roof system applications. The 530-page manual includes information about roof decks, rigid board insulation, roof membranes, surfacings and system design guidelines, as well as 318 construction details.

The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems—2007 on CD-ROM offers all the information and details contained in the print version. In addition, it includes several sections from The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual, Fifth Edition, including steep-slope roofing; spray polyurethane foam roofing; architectural sheet-metal and metal roofing; and reroofing and moisture control.

NRCA Construction Details on CD-ROM—2007 allows users to use the construction details contained in The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems—2007 with Auto-CAD® software. The CD-ROM includes 318 roof construction details in isometric and section views, including steep-slope; architectural sheet-metal and metal; and SPF-based details with Auto-CAD software.

2007-08 Steep-slope Roofing Materials Guide includes information from 49 manufacturers about 382 steep-slope products, including asphalt shingles; fiber-cement and synthetic roof components; metal roof components; tile, wood shakes and shingles; slate; and underlayment. It also provides detailed descriptions, comparative data, manufacturer-reported wind and fire ratings, ASTM International test results and building code approvals, as well as information about warranties offered for most asphalt shingle products.

The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual—Anthology is a CD-ROM containing technical roofing information published by NRCA from 1971-2006. It includes the Manual of Roofing Practice, as well as the first through fifth editions of The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual.

MVP Awards deadline nears

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress has announced a call for entries for its Roofing Industry's Most Valuable Player (MVP) Awards Program. The deadline for entries is Nov. 12.

Any roofing field worker (up to and including superintendent) employed by an NRCA member or nonmember contractor is eligible to be nominated. Criteria by which nominees will be evaluated include community service and volunteerism; attracting new roofing workers and helping retain existing ones; contributions to a team effort; outstanding on-the-job performance; and other noteworthy contributions and activities.

The awards program will recognize 10 roofing workers from 10 geographic regions. Winners will be notified in late 2007 and receive round-trip airfare to NRCA's 121st Annual Convention and the 2008 International Roofing Expo in Las Vegas Feb. 19-23, two nights' hotel accommodations, complimentary conference registration and exhibit hall passes. There, they will be honored during NRCA's Luncheon and receive $100 American Express gift cards.

This year, one of the 10 MVP Award winners will be chosen as the winner of Professional Roofing's Best of the Best contest. Professional Roofing and OMG Inc., Agawam, Mass., are co-sponsoring this award category, which will include a special prize awarded by OMG and recognition in Professional Roofing magazine and NRCA's For Members Only newsletter, as well as on the Alliance's Web site, www.roofingindustryalliance.net.

Judging will be conducted by a panel of roofing industry representatives, including manufacturers, contractors and other industry suppliers.

More than 220 participants have completed SpecRight Program training sessions. The SpecRight Program, an NRCA-sponsored program supported by The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress and other industry partners, focuses on educating roofing contractors about sustainable, environmentally responsible, energy-efficient roof systems. The program stresses the importance of proper design and installation, quality materials and ongoing maintenance and gives contractors the tools to emphasize quality over cost.

The class is now available as a customized educational training program. For more information, log on to www.specright.net or contact Allison Noble, NRCA's manager of customized education, at (800) 323-9545, ext. 7509 or anoble@nrca.net.

NRCA and Arizona association form partnership

NRCA and the Arizona Roofing Contractors Association (ARCA) have signed a partnership agreement in which NRCA and ARCA have agreed to promote membership in both associations.

As part of the agreement, NRCA will conduct two one-day educational seminars per year for ARCA; hold an orientation meeting at NRCA's offices for a person or persons of ARCA's choosing; and advise ARCA in advance of all planned NRCA events in Arizona.

NRCA also will consult with ARCA whenever possible about political issues arising in Arizona and political candidates from Arizona NRCA is considering supporting.

NRCA launches SmartBrief

NRCA has launched NRCA SmartBrief, a free opt-in e-mail newsletter that sends top roofing industry news stories to roofing professionals four days each week, keeping them informed about current industry events.

An e-mail will be sent to roofing professionals in mid-October asking whether they want to subscribe to the newsletter; a link is also available on NRCA's Web site, www.nrca.net. NRCA will continue to offer its E-News every Tuesday.
