Call for Gold Circle Award entries

NRCA is seeking nominations for its 2008 Gold Circle Awards program. The program recognizes NRCA members for significant contributions to the roofing industry.

Categories include outstanding workmanship—low-slope; outstanding workmanship—steep-slope; innovative solutions—new construction; innovative solutions—reroofing; service to the community; and service to the industry.

In addition, the Gold Circle Safety Award will be awarded to accident-free projects where public protection challenges demanded creative safety solutions, challenging safety procedures or extensive involvement of multiple trades. The safety award is not a Gold Circle Award nomination category but a special honor awarded by the Gold Circle judges.

Unique roofing-related projects, programs and services completed between June 1, 2005, and May 31, 2007, are eligible for the competition. Entries must be postmarked by Sept. 14. Winners will be honored during NRCA's 121st Annual Convention Feb. 19-23, 2008, in Las Vegas.

For more information or to obtain a Gold Circle Award application, contact Chrystine Hanus, NRCA's executive assistant, at (800) 323-9545, ext. 7522 or chanus@nrca.net, or download an application from www.nrca.net/rp/about/awards/gold/.

NRCA offers safety posters

NRCA has released Safety in Sight, a series of 12 posters displaying health- and safety-related procedures and precautions of which workers should be aware, including keeping fire extinguishers nearby and remembering to tie off ladders. The posters are printed in English and Spanish and are intended to be displayed in an office or shop.

For more information about NRCA's Safety in Sight posters or to place an order, visit shop.nrca.net; fax (847) 299-1183; or call NRCA InfoExpress at (866) ASK-NRCA (275-6722).

Participate in Project Recovery

In 2001, NRCA partnered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). This alliance led to the creation of "Project Recovery," a program designed to help roofing professionals become involved locally in the search for missing children.

According to NCMEC, one in seven missing children is found when someone recognizes a child's photo and notifies law enforcement. With Project Recovery, participating contractors and manufacturers place on their service vehicles 18- by 24-inch magnetic posters with photos of missing children. The posters, which are designed and provided by NRCA, also include biographical information and contact information for when a child is seen. Many posters have age-progressed photos to help people recognize a child as he or she may look now. If a child is found, NRCA will send a "FOUND" sticker to place over the poster.

Participating contractors and manufacturers are asked to reimburse NRCA for the cost of the posters, which are $30 each. NRCA also is seeking program sponsors for Project Recovery to help cover the cost of distribution, administration and promotion.

There are three sponsorship categories. Primary sponsors donate $1,000 and receive 10 posters, press releases and additional communication about the program. Primary sponsors also are included on the program's letterhead. Supporting sponsors contribute $500 and receive five posters. Sustaining sponsors donate $100 and receive two posters. NRCA also welcomes any contributions of lesser amounts to support this program.

If you are interested in participating in Project Recovery or for more information, contact Ambika Puniani Bailey, NRCA's senior director of communications, at (800) 323-9545, ext. 7555 or abailey@nrca.net.

Call for design entries

NRCA has announced a call for entries for its fifth annual SpecRight Excellence in Design Award, which honors those who design energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and long-lasting roof systems according to accepted industry practices.

Nominated roof systems must have been designed and installed after Jan. 1, 2005, and entries must be postmarked by Dec. 17. Judging will be conducted by a panel of roofing industry experts.

A winner will be selected in late January 2008. The winner will be announced during a special awards ceremony held during NRCA's 121st Annual Convention Feb. 19-23, 2008, and will receive a $2,500 cash prize, publicity during the convention, and acknowledgement in Professional Roofing magazine and NRCA's Web site, www.nrca.net.

Callback: In "NRCA's new green roof systems manual," July issue, page 22, PVC membranes were inadvertently omitted from NRCA's list of recommended waterproofing membranes for green roof systems. The article should have read: "For example, in the manual, NRCA recommends only the following waterproofing membrane types be used for green roof systems: nominal 215-mil (0.215-inch) minimum thickness, fabric-reinforced, hot-fluid-applied polymer-modified asphalt membrane; two-layer minimum APP- or SBS-polymer-modified bitumen sheet membrane; 60-mil minimum thickness, reinforced EPDM membrane with stripped-in lap seams; 80-mil minimum thickness, reinforced PVC membrane with stripped-in laps; or fabric-reinforced, one- or two-component, fluid-applied elastomeric membrane."
