Christina E. Erbsen, Salida, Colo.; Brian C. Head, Montgomery, Ala.; Justine A. Semack, McDonald, Pa.; Mary E. Wolfe, Wyomissing, Pa.; and Matthew J. Woodruff, Fond du Lac, Wis., received Roofing Industry Scholarships from the National Roofing Foundation (NRF), a separate but related educational and research organization of NRCA.
The scholarships, which provide recipients with $1,000 per year for up to four years of undergraduate study, are awarded to employees, immediate family of employees or immediate family of NRCA contractor members. Applicants must plan to continue their education in university or vocational programs. Recipients may use the money to support their studies at any accredited postsecondary institution; scholarships are not limited to students planning to enter the roofing industry.
Erbsen is the daughter of David Erbsen, co-owner/sales with United Construction, Salida; Head is the son of Stanley Head, secretary/treasurer at Southeastern Roofing Co. Inc., Montgomery; Semack is the daughter of Cindy Semack, quality-assurance representative at Centimark Corp., Canonsburg, Pa.; Wolfe is the daughter of Gary Wolfe, chairman and chief executive officer of Wolfe Roofing & Sheet Metal, Reading, Pa.; and Woodruff is the son of Jeffery Woodruff, roofing supervisor at W.J. Woodruff Roofing Contractors Inc., Fond du Lac.
Recipients were chosen based on academic record, potential to succeed, leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of education goals and a third-party appraisal. Financial need is not considered.
In addition, NRF renewed eight scholarships this year. The recipients include Ashley N. Auker, Ephrata, Pa., who is attending the University of Delaware, Newark; Joanna M. Caccavo, New City, N.Y., who is attending Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn.; Christa M. Harder, Buffalo, N.Y., who is attending State University of New York College at Buffalo; Jessica N. Hibbard, Arlington, Texas, who is attending Texas Christian University, Fort Worth; Whitney Liftig, Fort Myers, Fla., who is attending Stetson University, DeLand, Fla.; Kathryn Mescher, Mount Vernon, Ill., who is attending John Brown University, Siloam Springs, Ark.; Lindsey A. Minder, Gansevoort, N.Y., who is attending Marist College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and Jarod W. Olds, Dallas, who is attending Austin College, Sherman, Texas.

NRCA's comprehensive Repair Manual for Low-slope Membrane Roof Systems will help you identify problems and permanently repair low-slope membrane roof systems. You will learn the most reliable long-term repair procedures for built-up, modified bitumen, thermoplastic and thermoset roof systems. These repairs fall into three categories: spot patching, general repairs, and major repairs and maintenance. With instructions for more than 150 repairs, this hands-on manual is designed for your crews to use on job sites.
Guidelines for the Design of Energy-efficient Roof Systems is intended for design professionals who want to specify energy-efficient roof systems, as well as those who need to meet the requirements of ASHRAE Standard 90.1-1999, "Energy Efficient Design of New Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential." This manual is best used with the "Low-slope Membrane Roofing" and "Moisture Control" sections of The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual, Fifth Edition.
More roofing professionals are doing work after dark, and nighttime roofing work can present its own set of unique hazards. The video program Spotlight on Safety: Nighttime Roofing Work illustrates critical safety precautions you can take, including proper job-site setup, lighting tips, safety material handling and fall protection to prevent nighttime hazards. A Spanish version also is available.
Making sure your workers know the proper guidelines for kettle and tanker inspection and maintenance is extremely important. Your Down and Dirty Guide to Kettle and Tanker Inspection and Maintenance includes a 23-minute video and accompanying workbook that will help you train your roofing workers and others about the proper methods for inspection and maintenance of kettles and tankers. The workbook also addresses worker safety, regulatory compliance issues and safe transportation methods for kettles and tankers. A Spanish version also is available.
NRCA abroad
NRCA's Paris Study Tour 2005 will be held Nov. 6-13 in Paris, where participants will attend BATIMAT 2005, a biennial European construction trade show, Nov. 7-12. Attendees will experience a seven-night stay at the Ritz Paris Hotel; admission and transportation to BATIMAT; a welcome dinner reception at Ritz Paris Hotel; a private full-day guided Paris tour; a private full-day guided tour to Chantilly; and a farewell dinner reception at a fine restaurant, among other things.
There are limited reservations, so interested parties are asked to respond as soon as possible. The registration deadline is Sept. 1, 2005. The welcome dinner will be Nov. 6, so attendees should book an airline reservation to arrive in Paris that morning or early afternoon and depart Nov. 13. Prices for the study tour are $3,250 per person based on double occupancy ($6,500 per couple) and $4,500 per person based on single occupancy.

ROOFPAC opportunities
ROOFPAC is NRCA's federally registered political action committee dedicated to supporting pro-business candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. ROOFPAC contributes money to these candidates' campaigns during election cycles, and this money often is raised through the committee's events and programs. Following are descriptions of some of ROOFPAC's events and programs.
Political Insiders Council (PICS)Recognizing members who contribute $5,000 in personal funds to ROOFPAC each year, PICS offers benefits such as a VIP tour of the White House, tickets and more.
Political TopsThis program recognizes members who solicit and persuade others to contribute to ROOFPAC. Each district "Top" contributes $2,500 of his own money annually.
Fall Legislative ConferenceMembers will meet in Washington, D.C., Oct. 18-21 to ensure legislative issues related to the roofing industry are a significant part of Congress' agenda. PIC and Political Tops members will be able to participate in a special VIP tour.
NRCA's 119th Annual ConventionThe 2006 convention will be in Las Vegas Feb. 13-16. The following events will be held to raise money for ROOFPAC:
