NRCA sponsors Kickoff to Rebuild

NRCA co-sponsored Rebuilding Together's "Kickoff to Rebuild 2006" on Feb. 3 in Detroit. The 11th annual event, held two days before the National Football League's (NFL's) Super Bowl XL, featured the rehabilitation of the Cass Community Social Services/Activity Center and a press conference.

NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and wife Chandler Tagliabue, NFL players and community volunteers renovated the Cass Activity Center, which provides daily meals and transportation for developmentally disabled adults and seniors, as well as teaches them about safety, hygiene, exercise, money management and social interaction. The volunteers focused on repairs to brighten the facility and improve the safety of and environment for the clients and staff. Sponsors included NRCA; Countrywide Financial Services, Calabasas, Calif.; Home Depot, Atlanta; Nonprofit Facilities Fund, a program of the United Way for southeastern Michigan, Detroit; and Sodexho, Gaithersburg, Md. NRCA contributed $5,000, as well as an additional $5,000 worth of public-awareness advertising.

Rebuilding Together is the largest volunteer housing rehabilitation organization in the U.S. Each year, more than 8,700 houses and 400 nonprofit facilities are rehabilitated by 275,000 volunteers in 1,879 cities and towns across the U.S. The organization also provides home repairs for low-income, elderly and disabled community members.

"Our participation with the Kickoff to Rebuild program is a part of our long-term partnership with Rebuilding Together," says Bill Good, NRCA's executive vice president. "This event showcases what Rebuilding Together does, which includes rehabilitating 9,000 homes each year for the elderly and needy. Nearly all those homes need roofing work, and we're proud to be part of the effort."

NRCA rebuilds damaged church

NRCA committed $50,000 to the rehabilitation of the roof on the Greater St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church in New Orleans, which was damaged severely by Hurricane Rita and has no insurance to pay for repairs.

NRCA member Beldon Roofing Co., San Antonio, performed the roofing work for the project. Beldon Roofing completed the first phase of the roof repair before Christmas and finished the project after structural repairs were completed by The Ellis Co., Kenner, La.

"The storms truly were an unfortunate situation for the Gulf Coast region, and we were glad we could play a small role in getting them back on their feet," says Brad Beldon, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Beldon Roofing. "We would do it all again tomorrow."

The National Roofing Foundation (NRF), a separate but related organization to NRCA, reimbursed Beldon Roofing for labor costs. Bruce Fryer, CEO of Fryer Roofing Co. Inc., Fresno, Calif., coordinated the project, which was completed Feb. 3.

"I am moved by the tremendous support by NRCA and its member contractors for victims of the recent hurricanes," Fryer says. "Brad Beldon mobilized crews and provided immediate relief. Zach Ellis of The Ellis Co., who lost his home and nearly lost his business to the hurricanes, did not hesitate to join this effort. This should serve as a testament to the character and commitment of our members."

The Greater St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church, led by Rev. J. Nelson Brown, has a congregation of 650. Located in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, the church is isolated from the rest of the city by the Mississippi River. Church officials and volunteers have been serving meals at the facility every day since the hurricanes destroyed their community and have provided supplies, water and ice, as well.

NRF established its Disaster Relief Fund to provide new roofs in regions affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and is seeking labor, monetary and material donations to support the fund. NRF also currently is pursuing donations to replenish the materials used for the Greater St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church project.

For more information about how to make a donation or apply for funding, contact Jacki Golike, NRCA's associate executive director for operations, at (847) 299-9070, Ext. 7582, or jgolike@nrca.net. Donation forms are available online at www.nrca.net/member/about/charity/disaster/default.aspx.

The EnergyWise Roof Calculator is a software application that offers an interactive, graphic method of constructing virtual roof assemblies to evaluate thermal efficiency. This program prompts users to enter specific roof assembly information, such as roof area, climatic region, heat type and cost, roof openings and roofing materials to be used; it then generates a report summarizing the proposed roof assembly design, estimated heating and cooling costs, and minimum thermal requirements. Minimum thermal insulation requirements established by ASHRAE Standard 90.1-1999 are included, as well.

The NRCA Roofing Safety Resource CD allows users to develop company- and job-specific safety programs, quickly access resource and training materials, and manage an assortment of safety-related issues. Users also can compile, save and print safety programs; track and store employee data; complete, save and print required OSHA injury report forms; link to current OSHA regulations, state-plan Web sites and other safety resources; and develop a safety program in a customized format. The CD-ROM contains the full set of NRCA toolbox talks, NRCA Pocket Guide to Safety and job-hazard assessment checklists.

The Insurance Guide for the Professional Roofing Contractor, Second Edition, updated in 2005, helps users evaluate insurance needs, establish programs and monitor effectiveness. This guide also provides information about types of insurance coverage and serves as a reference tool for users when they communicate with insurance agents or brokers.
