Join the Alliance

Made up of roofing contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and other industry professionals, The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress brings the industry together to conduct research and educational projects that support roofing industry programs; ensure timely and forward-thinking industry responses to economic and technological issues; and enhance the long-term viability and attractiveness of the industry to roofing workers.

There are numerous ways individuals and corporations can become Alliance members. Commitments to the Alliance can be pledged during a three- to five-year period, and public recognition is given in accordance with the donor's wishes and commitment level. Visionary Founders donate $1 million; Founders donate $500,000; Guarantors donate $250,000; Regents donate $100,000; and Governors donate $50,000.

Major investors in the Alliance (defined as contractors who commit at least $50,000 and manufacturers or suppliers that commit at least $100,000) are given national public acknowledgement during NRCA's annual convention and other special events and programs. These Alliance members are invited to the Alliance's semiannual meetings and participate in the project task forces established to guide the Alliance's agenda.

To read about the Alliance's most recent projects, see "Working together," page 40. For more information about the Alliance or to become a member, contact Bennett Judson, the Alliance's executive director, at (800) 323-9545, ext. 7513 or bjudson@roofingindustryalliance.net or visit www.roofingindustryalliance.net.

NRCA University launches online PV program

NRCA University has launched Photovoltaics and Roofing, an interactive online educational program that examines photovoltaic (PV) applications that offer the opportunity to use rooftop space for electricity generation.

Photovoltaics and Roofing includes animation, graphics, videos and interactive learning activities and takes about one hour to complete. The educational program focuses on the basic components of PV technology and how it works; rooftop PV system types; building codes and standards applicable to PV systems; recommendations for desirable performance attributes pertaining to weatherproofing and impact, fire and wind resistance; design issues, including membrane integrity, electrical, structural support and flashing requirements; roof reflectivity compatibility; environmental conditions and seasonal efficiency changes; installation recommendations for rack-mounted PV and roof-integrated photovoltaic (RIPV) systems on existing roofs and RIPV applications for single-ply and metal panel roof systems; and maintenance issues, fall-protection requirements and safety hazards.

Photovoltaics and Roofing is one of seven modules in NRCA University's Roofing, Energy and the Environment Series, an online educational program aimed at helping roofing professionals and end users understand how roof systems can contribute to energy conservation and environmental protection. Other modules, Vegetative Roof Systems and Cool Roofs, were launched in late 2008. Upcoming modules are Building Codes and Rating Systems for Roofing; Introduction to Energy-efficient Roof Systems; EnergyWise Tutorial and Case Studies; and the Roofing, Energy and the Environment Series Certificate Examination.
