CRSMCA moes to new location

The Carolinas Roofing & Sheet Metal Contractors Association (CRSMCA) Inc. held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new corporate offices at 710 Imperial Court, Charlotte, N.C. 28273. According to Dottie Nagle, CRSMCA's executive director, the association is expected to move into its new location this month.

Union donates to victims' families

The Union Roofing Contractors Association (URCA), Los Angeles, donated $25,000 to the Building and Construction Trades Department and Greater New York Building and Construction Trades Council's Families' Relief Fund after the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedies. URCA's board of directors donated the money for families of 61 members of the Building and Construction Trades Department who lost their lives.

"We only have 26 members, but our compassion is strong," says Bradford Fielder, chairman of URCA's board of directors. "There is a great mental and physical burden on the families of the deceased. We aim to relieve some of that burden."

According to representatives of the Greater New York Building and Construction Trades Council, each of the 61 families has received or will receive $30,000 from the fund.

Contest offers free roof system

PTL Contracting Inc., Anoka, Minn., is offering to install a free roof system on a senior citizen's house through its Christmas in July Contest. Entrants must be 65 years of age or older, live within one-hour driving distance of Anoka and have an annual income of $30,000 or less.

Entrants must submit a one-page letter describing why they should be chosen to receive the roof system. Entries must be received by May 31 and sent to Christmas in July Contest, PTL Contracting Inc., 18630 Highway 47, Anoka, MN 55303.

NRCA member honored

NRCA member Snyder Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Tigard, Ore., won an Oregon Family Business of the Year Award from the Austin Family Business Program at Oregon State University, Corvallis. Snyder Roofing & Sheet Metal was recognized as Medium Family Business of the Year for maintaining a technological edge; recognizing the importance of family relationships; juggling work and home lives; applying vision, efficiency, tenacity and performance; having pride in the family name; and planning for the future.

The Austin Family Business Program was established in 1985 as a family-business resource offering workshops, seminars, videos and other educational tools.

ASTM names award winner

ASTM International has named Walter J. Rossiter Jr. the 2002 winner of its Walter C. Voss Award. Rossiter, a research chemist in the Building and Fire Research Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, received the award for his contributions to building technology, particularly roofing and insulation research.

Rossiter, who has been an ASTM member since 1975, serves on ASTM Committee C16 on Thermal Insulation; ASTM Committee E06 on Performance of Buildings; and several subcommittees of ASTM Committee D08 on Roofing, Waterproofing and Bituminous Materials.

The annual award is named for Walter C. Voss, who furthered ASTM's work in research and standardization.

In other news, ASTM has established its New Business Development Unit to help organizations and businesses develop and distribute technical information. Through outsourcing and partnership agreements, the service can help develop a company's solutions into standards, guides or best practices; collaboratively author, edit and publish solutions electronically; distribute solutions globally; manage an audit trail; and develop multiformat product delivery.

NRCA member helps Habitat for Humanity

NRCA member B.T. Lakeside Roofing, Addison, Ill., reroofed a house in Westmont, Ill., through the DuPage Habitat for Humanity, Wheaton, Ill. B.T. Lakeside Roofing donated about $5,000 in materials and labor for the roof system's completion, and six of the company's roofing workers participated in the project. The house is the third the company has reroofed through its involvement with DuPage Habitat for Humanity.

Charitable event draws participants

Nearly 300 people, including several New Orleans Saints National Football League players and Miss America Katie Harman, participated in Rebuilding Together™ with Christmas in April® in New Orleans on Feb. 1.

Roof Technologies, Harvey, La., and Advanced Roofing & Coatings, Metairie, La., led the work effort, which included tearing off a damaged roof system, building a roof deck, applying shingles, repairing gutters and painting. Three houses were included in the project. Shingles were donated by Toledo, Ohio-based Owens Corning, and sponsors included Williams, Tulsa, Okla.; NRCA; The Home Depot,® Atlanta; Georgia-Pacific Corp., Atlanta; Countrywide Corp.,® Los Angeles; Association of Civil Engineers, Louisiana Section; and Copeland's of New Orleans.

In addition, Bill Luebbert, owner of Roof Technologies, donated $18,000 for completion of the project.

ARMA names contest winners

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) has announced the winners of its 2001 Accident Prevention Contest.

Manufacturing facilities were categorized by the number of labor hours worked during 2001: Group A—more than 300,000 hours; Group B—200,000 hours to 300,000 hours; Group C—100,000 hours to 200,000 hours; and Group D—less than 100,000 hours.

The facility with the fewest number of accidents in each category received an ARMA President's Award. The recipients were: Group A—Valley Forge, Pa.-based CertainTeed Corp.'s Oxford, N.C., facility; Group B—Wayne, N.J.-based GAF Materials Corp.'s Chester, S.C., facility; Group C—Denver-based Johns Manville Roofing Systems' Macon, Ga., facility; and Group D—CertainTeed's Chester, Pa., facility.

More contributions to the Pentagon project

As the damaged areas of the Pentagon's roof system continue to be reroofed, contributions to the NRCA Pentagon Project have remained steady. Since Professional Roofing last published a list of donors, the following companies have made financial contributions: Al Melanson Co. Inc., Keene, N.H.; American Roofing & Metal Co. Inc., Louisville, Ky.; Associated Roofing Inc., Kenmore, Wash.; Eagle Supply Inc., Tampa, Fla.; General Works LLC Roofing & Sheet Metal, Orange City, Fla.; Hartman Roofing Inc., Abilene, Texas; Jurin Roofing Services Inc., Quakertown, Pa.; Northwestern Indiana Roofing Contractors Association, Merrillville, Ind.; Olsson Roofing Co. Inc., Aurora, Ill.; P.W. Roofing, Arlington, Texas; and Watson Roofing Inc., Lake Geneva, Wis.

Material donations have been made by Koppers Industries Inc., Pittsburgh, Pa., and Tremco Inc., Beechwood, Ohio. And labor has been donated by Allen Brothers Inc., Rochester Hills, Mich., and Pro Inc. Roofing & Sheet Metal, Harrison Township, Mich.
