What is your position within your company?
I am president and CEO of Kaw Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Kansas City, Kan.

What is the most unusual roofing project of which you have been a part?
While installing a metal roof on a convention hotel, I had to help set up a cantilevered platform that extended out into the air 20 stories above the ground.

What is your roofing industry involvement?
I currently serve on The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress' board of directors. I previously served as NRCA's chairman of the board, and before that I served on NRCA's board of directors for two terms. I also have been involved with multiple NRCA committees throughout the years.

Why did you become involved in the roofing industry?
I worked for my family's roofing business throughout the summers during my college years without much intent of getting into the business. But my father talked me into becoming a third-generation roofing professional in our family business, so I joined as a project manager and estimator before becoming vice president and, later, president and CEO.

What was your first roofing experience?
Tearing off a built-up coal-tar pitch roof with fiberglass insulation. The building was torn down two years later, but for some reason I have never forgotten it.

What was your first job?
Stuffing Sunday newspapers for The Kansas City Star

What song are you listening to over and over?
"God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys

What do you consider a waste of time?
Listening to CNN and other news outlets spinning the news to get higher ratings

My favorite part about working in the roofing industry is …
By far, it is the people. I have had the privilege of getting to know people in my industry all over the world, and I would call every one of them a friend.

What's the most exciting/adventurous thing you've done?
Climbing to the highest point on the Great Wall of China

What's your favorite roofing material to work with? Why?
Polymer-modified bitumen—multiple layers beat a single-ply any day.

What is your favorite stress reliever?
Going to the lake because it is my happy place

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A sailor—I was in the Navy for four years, but I found out it wasn't what I really wanted to do.

People would be surprised to know …
I play very little golf, but I once got a hole-in-one.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Why?
I would like to have the ability to fly so I wouldn't need to mess with using drones.

What three condiments always are in your fridge?
Barbeque sauce, Frank's Red Hot Sauce and mayonnaise

If you had a time machine, would you go to the future or the past? Why?
I would want to go to the future. I've got to see what the next president is going to do to this country.

What quality do you most admire in a person?
Loyalty

What do you consider your most rewarding experiences?
Getting married to a red-headed girl 25 years ago and raising three great sons
