Collin DeBuysere

What is your position within your company?
I am project manager for Roofing Technology Inc., Davenport, Iowa.

What is the most unusual project of which you have been a part?
The most unusual project I worked on was a 1,700-square pitch tear-off. The project engineer wanted the existing gypsum deck to be overlaid with a metal deck. We attached the deck to the structure below the gypsum and put a new roof on top of the metal deck system.

What’s the most exciting/adventurous thing you’ve done?
My friends and I took a two-week trip to Thailand. We met in Singapore and continued on to Phuket and Chiang Mai. Almost every day was a new adventure, including bamboo rafting down a river, banging a gong at a Buddhist temple, releasing paper lanterns to celebrate the new year and feeding rescued elephants at a sanctuary in the jungle.

Why did you become involved in the roofing industry?
I started working for Roofing Technology as a warehouse employee during summer breaks. After I graduated college, I decided I wanted to keep working for the company.

Collin and his son, Camden

People would be surprised to know ...
I enjoy sailing. It’s tough to find a decent spot to sail in the Midwest, but my dad has a sailboat and we enjoy the challenge.

What is your roofing industry involvement?
I am an NRCA director and treasurer for the Iowa Roofing Contractors Association. I also participate in ASTM International’s Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
My grandma always says I wanted to be a garbage man.

What was your first roofing experience?
My first roofing experience was working on a small roof system on the 13th floor of a building in Davenport. The fast-paced coordination of setting up the crane, staging materials in a small space, blocking off two lanes of traffic and tearing off roofing materials was highly interesting to me as a new employee.

My favorite part about working in the roofing industry is ...
Seeing relief on a building owner’s face after we alleviated the stress of his or her problem

If you had a time machine, would you go to the future or the past? Why?
I would visit the past to see how the Egyptian pyramids were built.

What was your first job?
Detasseling corn for seed supplier Remington Hybrids in Geneseo, Ill.

What is your favorite stress reliever?
Going on a hike with my wife and son

What three condiments always are in your fridge?
Ketchup, ranch dressing and more ranch dressing

What song are you listening to over and over?
“Grey Street,” by Dave Matthews Band

What’s your favorite roofing material to work with? Why?
EPDM—I don’t have to worry about false welds, and it is easy to repair

Big city or small town?
I grew up in a small town with 6,000 residents. I would choose a small town every time!

What quality do you most admire in a person?
I admire someone who does the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing.
