In 2007, Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman created a giant rubber duck to entertain people through a "spreading joy around the world" goodwill tour. In October 2013, the large duck made its U.S. debut on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh.
Custom-built for each city, each duck is constructed of more than 200 pieces of PVC and inflated 40 feet high, requiring a hydraulic crane for transport into the water. ALL® Crane Rental of Pennsylvania LLC, West Elizabeth, Pa., assisted with lifting the massive installation onto 14,000-pound pontoons, where it was towed along the river for one month.
So far, the duck has visited Australia, Brazil, France, Holland, Hong Kong and New Zealand.
