Twenty years ago, hundreds of donors and volunteers from the roofing industry gave time, money and materials to reconstruct the Pentagon’s slate roof system following the 9/11 attacks.

When a plane hit the Pentagon Sept. 11, 2001, about 60,000 square feet of roof area was burned. John and Kimberly Francis, owners of Northern Virginia Roofing, Falls Church, approached NRCA with the idea of rebuilding the Pentagon’s roof system, and the industry swiftly came together to begin making repairs the following month.

In June 2002, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a formal resolution to commend “the patriotic contributions of roofing professionals” who repaired the Pentagon’s roof system.
