Fryer Roofing Co. Inc., Fresno, Calif., recently completed a multi-phase project for Kaiser Permanente Hospital, Fresno, Calif.
The building has an unusual design with multiple roof levels totaling 2,297 squares. The design presented logistical challenges because of the hospital wanted to prevent loud noise and any inconvenience to patients and staff. Extensive preplanning was required before the roofing work because materials could only be loaded Saturday mornings between 7 a.m. and noon and only after patients were relocated to areas away from construction.
The hospital required Fryer Roofing to develop a safety plan specific to the project; the hospital had to approve the plan. In addition, Fryer Roofing employees and the subcontractors' employees were required to have current physicals and drug tests, which the hospital kept on file. Full fall-arrest systems were required at perimeter roof edges at all times with no exceptions, and all work areas had to be demarcated and policed to avoid unauthorized traffic.
The hospital selected the 2001 Company's vented roof system with 20-year leak-free warranty because it eliminated costly roof removal. Its use minimized noise and virtually eliminated dust and debris. Once the gravel was vacuumed, the roof was penetrated to allow venting of any moisture-laden insulation. Over time, the insulation will dry and recapture some of its lost thermal resistance. The new white 60-mil-thick PVC roof system then was installed over one layer of DensDeck,® which was over the existing built-up roof system.
Finally, in areas where the hospital did not want reflection from the white membraneparticularly near patient rooms overlooking the roofa tinted elastomeric roof coating was applied.
