The offices, Sunday school classrooms and fellowship hall within Trinity United Methodist Church in downtown Roanoke, Va., recently were converted into 15 elderly affordable housing units.

Affordable housing developer Restoration Housing, Roanoke, used historic tax credits, grants and donations to help offset the rehabilitation costs that included a new asphalt shingle roof system on Worship Hall and a 9.45-kilowatt rooftop solar panel array on the annex wing.

Installed by SolShine Energy, Roanoke, the panels’ visibility was intentionally discrete to remain compliant with the historic tax credits. Their positioning allows for maximum exposure while remaining invisible from street view.

The system is projected to generate more than 11,000 kilowatt-hours annually, offsetting a meaningful share of the building’s electric costs, a direct benefit to the low-income residents Trinity Commons serves.
