Paul Morris passes away

Paul L. Morris, former president and owner of NRCA member Sellers & Marquis Roofing Co., Kansas City, Mo., passed away Aug. 6. Morris was 79.

Morris began his career as a truck driver with Sellers & Marquis Roofing in 1946. He became a manager in 1950, vice president in 1959 and owner in 1971. Morris retired in 1985.

Morris was a member of various roofing industry associations, including NRCA and the Midwest Roofing Contractors Association, and served in several leadership roles.

He received prestigious awards from several roofing industry associations, including NRCA's J.A. Piper Award in 1973, an award for roofing professionals who have demonstrated outstanding service to NRCA and the roofing industry.

Morris and his wife, Billy Ann, also established the Colonial Presbyterian Preschool scholarship program.

Morris is survived by his wife; four children and their spouses—Michael and Denise Morris, Edd Carey and Victoria, Leonard and Jan Morris, and Jim Myers and Lee Ann; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a half brother, Hugh Church.

The Morris family is requesting memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60601.

Elk Corp. earns recognition

Elk Corp., Dallas, has received recognition from readers of Builder magazine for "Best Quality" in the roofing—asphalt/fiberglass shingles category for the seventh consecutive year. More than 6,000 readers, classified as "builders, builder-developers and general contractors," were surveyed. The results are based on 2,076 responses.

CertainTeed product wins award

Valley Forge, Pa.-based CertainTeed Corp.'s MemBrain® polyamide smart vapor retarder was named most valuable new product in the construction products category of the 2004 MVP Awards contest sponsored by Building Products magazine. The first vapor retarder of its kind in the United States, MemBrain was selected by a panel of U.S. builders, architects and remodelers from a pool of 170 products of which only 30 were winning products.

A nylon-based material, MemBrain allows excess moisture to escape and is impermeable to organic pollutants and gases. It is made of polyamide film that can change permeability from less than 1 perm at low humidity to greater than 20 perms at high relative humidity.

In addition, CertainTeed joined Habitat for Humanity volunteers to build a new home for NASCAR fan Jeff Cooke during the 2004 Coca-Cola 600 and Nextel Cup All-Star races in Charlotte, N.C., in May. CertainTeed donated shingles, vinyl siding and vinyl windows.

Englert forms alliance

Englert Inc., Perth Amboy, N.J., plans to distribute a line of computerized metal roofing shears and folders manufactured by RAS Systems LLC, Peachtree, Ga. Englert will offer the TURBObend metal folding system, as well as the SMARTcut Shear, and will train its staff to sell and service the machines in the RAS Systems roofing line.

The RAS Systems products will be sold in 12 Englert regional branch locations, including Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

In addition, Englert has opened a new facility in Romeoville, Ill., which will serve Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin. The 15,000-square-foot (1394-m²) warehousing and service facility will be used to store metal roofing inventory, accessory parts and more. The facility also includes 1,500 square feet (139 m²) of office space.

Georgia-Pacific restarts production

Atlanta-based Georgia-Pacific has restarted production at its softwood lumber sawmill in Sterling, Ga., which had been idle since November 2000. The sawmill is one of three operations at the Sterling complex, which consists of a sawmill, core mill and lumber pressure-treating facility. The core mill and pressure-treating facility still were in operation while the sawmill was idle. In full operation, the complex will have about 100 employees and capacity to produce 100 million board feet of dimensional lumber each year.

MFM Building Products partners

NRCA member MFM Building Products Corp., Coshocton, Ohio, and Colbond Inc., Arnhem, Netherlands, have partnered to create and distribute new products, as well as educate industry professionals about water and moisture management. The partnership makes available Colbond drainage products through MFM Building Products' North American distribution network and also will include joint product development, marketing and promotion.

Product lines promoted and sold through the agreement include Enkadri & Drain® BTM, Enkadri Pour & Proof,® Colbond's Enkadrain® and MFM Building Products' SubSeal.®

Owens Corning upgrades facility

Toledo, Ohio-based Owens Corning will upgrade its Summit, Ill., facility to include laminated shingle production in addition to its standard three-tab roofing products. The new line, which begins operation this quarter, will cater mostly to the Midwest and complement the existing regional laminate production plants in Indiana, Minnesota and Ohio.

Bostik Findley Inc. has named Kevin Burrows distribution group territory sales manager for California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

Missy DeLaTorre has been hired as customer service/business development manager for National Coatings Corp.

Nick Quartier has been appointed vice president of sales and marketing for Reichel & Drews.

Tarco has named Steve Wilcox vice president of sales.

MCA announces technical bulletins

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) has released new technical bulletins that focus on different areas of metal construction, including Ecological Benefits of Metal Roofing and Recycled Content and Metal Roofing and Siding Panels.

Ecological Benefits of Metal Roofing addresses topics such as sustainability, energy efficiency, product safety and recyclability. Metal Roofing and Siding Panels discusses recent recycling data relating to aluminum, copper, steel and zinc. The technical bulletins can be found on MCA's Web site, www.metalconstruction.org.

NEREF awards scholarships

The North East Roofing Educational Foundation (NEREF) announced the recipients of its annual scholarships June 26.

  • DECRA Roofing Systems Inc. offers its DECRA newsletter on its Web site, www.decra.com. Newsletter features include a trade-show calendar; contractor profile; job profile; tips column; distributor profile; "In the News" section; and a regional manager profile. Newsletter signup is accessible through the contractor section of the Web site.

  • The Metal Construction Association has added to its Web site, www.metalconstruction.org, an "Ask the Industry Professionals" section. The new section has seven categories with panelists who answer visitors' questions.

  • Follansbee Steel has redesigned its Web site, www.follansbeeroofing.com, which now allows visitors to browse through product information, specifications, installation and warranty information for the company's entire product line. A "What's New" section provides current information about product testing, and visitors can search Follansbee Steel distributors by geographical region. Also, an expanded project gallery recommends products for different project categories.
