Snyder Roofing reorganizes
After the unexpected death of its president, Harold "Butch" Johnston, Snyder Roofing of Oregon LLC, Portland, Ore., has reorganized its operations. Scott King, the company's former vice president, has been appointed president, and Ron Newton, a former estimator, has been appointed vice president and chief operating officer.

Campany Roofing Inc., West Palm Beach, Fla., recently was profiled on the Discovery Channel during Pat Summerall's "Champions of Industry" series. Michigan groups award scholarships
The Southeastern Michigan Roofing Contractors Association (SMRCA) Inc. and Roofers Union Local 149 have awarded six $600 scholarships to students enrolled in postsecondary institutions.
This year's winners include Nicholas Lynn, who is attending St. Clair Community College, Port Huron, Mich.; Michele Maleszyk, who is attending Wayne State University, Wayne, Neb.; Michael Marquardt, who is attending Grand Valley State University, Allendale, Mich.; Kimberly Stashuk, who is attending Michigan State University, East Lansing; Meghan Symons, who is attending Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti; and Rebecca Woltman, who is attending Albion College, Albion, Mich.
Scholarship recipients must be dependents of SMRCA contractor members' employees and complete an essay about the importance of the roofing industry. INSPEC awards scholarships
Minneapolis-based INSPEC Inc. has awarded four $1,000 scholarships to students who have maintained high academic standards during postsecondary school.
This year's winners include Christina Campbell, a fourth-year student at Bemidji State University, Bemidji, Minn.; Aimee Long, a graduate student at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; David Witkoski, who is enrolled in his final year at the University of Wisconsin—Madison; and Gregory Long, a student at NEI College of Technology, Columbia Heights, Minn.

NRCA announces new awards
During its 117th Annual Convention and Exhibit in San Diego, Feb. 22-25, 2004, NRCA will present its new 2004 Excellence in Design Award and 2004 Exhibitor Excellence Awards. Entries for the awards programs now are being accepted.
The 2004 Excellence in Design Award program honors energy-efficient and environmentally friendly designed roof systems that have been designed according to accepted industry practices and are expected to last for a long period of time. Architects, specifiers, roof consultants and roofing contractors who are responsible for a nominated roof system's design are eligible for the competition.
Nominated roof systems must have been designed and installed after Jan. 1, 2001. Entries must be postmarked by Dec. 12, and judging will be conducted by a panel of roofing industry experts selected by NRCA. Self-nominations are welcome.
Up to five finalists will be selected Jan. 1, 2004, to receive complimentary airfare, one night's lodging and full registration to NRCA's 117th Annual Convention and Trade Show. The winner will receive a $2,500 cash prize.

The 2004 Exhibitor Excellence Awards program honors excellence and innovation embodied by companies exhibiting at NRCA's 117th Annual Convention and Exhibit. Awards will be presented in four categories: most innovative new product, service or program; most effective marketing program; best product, service or program that contributes to safety in the roofing industry; and most customer-friendly product, service or program.
Exhibitors can nominate themselves or be nominated by any NRCA member in any or all categories. Entries must be postmarked by Dec. 1, and judging will be conducted by NRCA's Executive Committee in January 2004.

NRF seeks award entries
The National Roofing Foundation (NRF), a separate but related educational and research organization of NRCA, is accepting entries for its William C. Cullen Fellowship Award.
The annual fellowship was created in 1998 to honor late NRCA research associate William C. Cullen and awards an $8,000 grant to an individual or research organization to support research relating specifically to the advancement of roofing technology. Research project types are intentionally undefined to allow for consideration of a broad range of projects.
The award will be presented at the annual installation dinner held during NRCA's Midyear Meetings, July 14-17, 2004, in Chicago. The recipient will receive a recognition plaque and paid travel and lodging related to the award presentation.
Nominations must be received by March 1, 2004.

Garland receives innovation award
Cleveland-based The Garland Co. Inc. has received a 2003 NorTech Innovation Award from NorTech, a coalition of technology and business leaders who promote economic growth and leadership in northeast Ohio. Garland received the award for its reflective StressPly® EUV Mineral modified bitumen membrane with Starburst™ Mineral Surfacing. To be considered for the award, companies must describe their innovations and effects the innovations have had on their businesses and customers.
Twenty-five companies and nonprofit organizations won the award.
CertainTeed excels in safety
Valley Forge, Pa.-based CertainTeed Corp.'s Glenwood, Ark., and Oxford, N.C., plants received Diamond Awards from CertainTeed's parent company, Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, Paris, for outstanding safety records. The annual award is given to Compagnie de Saint-Gobain's worldwide manufacturing facilities with the lowest accident rates. CertainTeed's plants were two of four U.S. facilities recognized.
"We are exceptionally proud of all the people who make safety and health a top priority at all our facilities," says John Donaldson, president of CertainTeed's Roofing Products Group.

SMACNA awards scholarships
The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association (SMACNA) Inc.'s College of Fellows has awarded three $1,200 scholarships to students enrolled in postsecondary institutions.
This year's winners include Natalie Dvorak, who is attending the University of Wisconsin—Madison; Stacy Peck, a student at the University of the Pacific, Stockton, Calif.; and Melissa Smuck, who is attending California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
The scholarships are available to college students who are employed by or whose parents are employed by SMACNA members. Winners must meet academic, extracurricular and community criteria to be considered for the scholarships. PIMA plans testing program
The Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association (PIMA) will launch the PIMA Quality MarkCM Program, a third-party testing program for polyisocyanurate insulation, effective Jan. 1, 2004. FM Global, the third-party administrator, will select random samples of permeable-faced polyisocyanurate insulation to measure and certify the samples' 15-year long-term thermal resistance values. Manufacturers that participate in the program may use the PIMA Quality MarkCM logo on certified products. Participants' polyisocyanurate manufacturing plants will be reviewed annually.
