ATAS International announces award winners
ATAS International Inc., Allentown, Pa., has announced the winners of its 2020 Project of the Year awards, which recognize projects in which ATAS International products have been incorporated into a building’s design. An independent panel of judges reviews the submitted projects and selects winners in six categories: commercial roofs, commercial walls, residential roofs, residential walls, accents and interiors.

The Riverview Branch Library in Riverview, Fla., won first place in the commercial roofs category; the David Rubenstein Forum at the University of Chicago, Chicago, won first place in the commercial walls category; the Elysian Beach Resort in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, won first place in the residential roofs category; a private residence in East Hampton, N.Y., won first place in the residential walls and interior categories; and the Lot H Parking Garage in Wilmington, Del., won first place in the accents category. In addition, ATAS International has made available a new education course on Hanley Wood University. “Using Technologically Advanced Metal Building Products in LEED, Net Zero, and Passive Buildings” is approved by The American Institute of Architects and Green Business Certification Inc. Learning objectives include understanding basic design principles behind LEED® and net-zero buildings; examining how to use technologically advanced metal roofing products in sustainable building design; and exploring four case studies where metal building products were used to meet green building standards.
Additionally, ATAS International has added a new manufacturing facility in University Park, Ill. The facility is ATAS International’s fourth manufacturing plant and will result in reduced lead times for customers in the north central region of the U.S.
The Garland Co. named company of the year

The Garland Co. Inc., Cleveland, was named Company of the Year for The ESOP Association’s Ohio/Kentucky chapter. The award is given annually to a company that demonstrates clear communication with its employees and a commitment to The ESOP Association’s vision of endorsing employee participation, wealth creation, and individual dignity and worth.
The Garland Co. initiated its employee stock ownership plan in 1985 and became 100% employee-owned in 2004. The company’s stock value has grown an average of 19.2% during the past decade. Its average employee balance ranks in the top five of U.S. ESOP companies that have more than 250 employees.
The Garland Co. promotes employee ownership through numerous initiatives, including quarterly town hall meetings with the president and innovation competitions that encourage employees to drive growth by developing new products and processes.
IKO® facility named business of the year
IKO, Wilmington, Del., has announced its Hillsboro, Texas, asphalt shingle manufacturing facility was named Hillsboro Area Chamber of Commerce’s Regional Business of the Year. The IKO plant was formally recognized by the organization at its annual awards banquet held in May.
Opened in 2018, the 250,000-square-foot manufacturing and warehousing facility supplies shingles to customers in Texas and other parts of the southwestern U.S. IKO was recognized for its commitment to continuous improvement, construction of more new facilities during the past two decades than any other company in its sector and the expansion of production in Hillsboro.
The Hillsboro plant and its employees also were recently recognized by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association as part of the association’s annual Accident Prevention Contest. The facility received an ARMA Perfect Employee Safety Certificate in recognition of earning a perfect safety score for the year and an ARMA Certificate of Safety Improvement, which marks an improvement of 25% or more compared with the previous year.
Boral® to sell North American business
Boral Ltd., Sydney, Australia, has entered into an agreement with a subsidiary of Westlake Chemical Corp., Houston, to sell its North American Building Products business for $2.15 billion.
The transaction is subject to customary conditions precedent and completion adjustments and is expected to be completed during the first half of fiscal year 2022.
OMG® celebrates 40th anniversary
OMG Inc., Agawam, Mass., is celebrating its 40th anniversary during 2021.
Established in 1981 under the name Olympic Fasteners Inc., the company originally distributed fasteners for commercial roofing applications. In the mid-1980s, the company began manufacturing and marketing its own line of construction fasteners at its plant in Agawam. The company now has nearly 600 employees globally and more than 400 in western Massachusetts, making it one of the area’s largest employers.

TAMKO® Building Products celebrates longtime employees

TAMKO Building Products LLC, Joplin, Mo., celebrated the 45th anniversary of its Knoxville, Tenn., plant July 15, as well as the retirements of two longtime employees, Arnold “Scott” Newby and Steve Russell.
Newby spent 33 years as general manager of the Knoxville facility before he was named Knoxville adviser just before his retirement. To recognize his leadership and career achievements, TAMKO Building Products named one of the Knoxville production lines “Arnold.”
Russell was one of the first employees to work at the Knoxville plant. His positions included various engineering roles and several promotions before being named senior director of integrated products, a senior leadership position for multiple TAMKO Building Products manufacturing locations. Upon his retirement, Russell had more than 44 years of dedicated service.

Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance pioneers program
Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance, Beachwood, Ohio, has been named a BioPreferred Program Pioneer by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for being among the first 500 companies to participate in the BioPreferred Certification Program. Five Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance products carry the USDA’s BioPreferred label, and a sixth product is undergoing the certification process and should be certified this year.
The BioPreferred Certification Program promotes the use of products derived from plants and other agricultural, marine and forestry materials. The program currently includes more than 3,000 companies and more than 16,000 qualified products.

Saint-Gobain North America, Malvern, Pa., has announced its CertainTeed roofing team in Little Rock, Ark., achieved 20 years without a lost-time incident.
The Little Rock team proudly commemorated its success, which is a new companywide record. The team credits its success to having good people who look out for themselves and each other every day.

Kelly Roofing, Naples, Fla., has announced it formed a strategic and financial partnership with Reliant Roofing, Jacksonville, Fla. Kelly Roofing is a family-owned company that serves customers in southern Florida. IBHS updates hail impact ratings
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety has released the first scheduled update of its Roof Shingle Hail Impact Ratings.
The performance ratings are based on the organization’s hail science research and peer-reviewed IBHS hail impact test protocol for asphalt shingles that mimics how up to 2-inch hail attacks a roof to better identify impact-resistant products. Cotney Consulting featured on Forbes list
Cotney Attorneys & Consultants, Tampa, Fla., has announced Cotney Consulting was a featured American small business on the Forbes Next 1000 list.
