GAF honors military veterans

GAF, Parsippany, N.J., has signed the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Statement of Support, recognizing the important role of the National Guard and Reserve and sending a message of support to the men and women who serve the U.S. GAF's statement of support complements other initiatives it has undertaken to support military veterans, servicemen and servicewomen, such as a Roofs for Troops military rebate program and a Hire-A-Hero military job board.

Additionally, GAF has participated in the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association's (PIMA's) efforts to achieve third-party-verified ISO-compliant Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for polyisocyanurate roof and wall insulations. GAF contributed data to PIMA's EPD initiative as part of its ongoing effort to support the green building community. The polyisocyanurate roof and wall insulation EPDs inform architects and designers of the environmental effects of the products and contribute to credits in green building rating systems in many countries.

MCA demonstrates hybrid metal roof system

The Metal Construction Association (MCA) partnered with the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Department of Defense (DOD) to host a demonstration project illustrating the benefits of retrofitting old buildings with new high-tech roof systems. The project is part of DOD's Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program at Goodfellow Air Force Base (GAFB), San Angelo, Texas.

The project was designed to demonstrate how a variety of technology can be combined in one roof system to reduce a building's carbon footprint and demand for energy and water. The retrofit metal roof system was installed directly over the existing roof system on the Security Forces Building at GAFB, eliminating the need to dispose of the old roofing material in landfills.

The hybrid roof system included metal roofing materials with high solar reflectance coatings to reduce energy costs; solar thermal water heating to provide hot water for use inside a building; a rainwater harvesting system to capture rainwater for nonpotable applications; and solar electric panels to generate electricity for a building. The metal roof system can be installed over existing low- or steep-slope roof systems.

The demonstration successfully showed how a building's environmental footprint can be reduced, an important first step as DOD looks to transform some of its 577,500 buildings and structures into energy-saving powerhouses.
