GAF facility receives certification

GAF, Parsippany, N.J., has announced its Tuscaloosa, Ala., asphalt shingle facility received Waste Diversion from Landfill certification from GreenCircle Certified LLC, a certifier of sustainability claims for products and operations. The certification recognizes GAF's efforts to reduce or reuse waste material, limiting the amount of waste sent to landfills. The Tuscaloosa plant achieved a 94 percent waste diversion rate and is the second GAF plant to receive certification.

Additionally, GAF has announced 11 of its asphalt shingle products meet new Los Angeles Green Building Code and California Title 24 guidelines. Los Angeles Green Building Code requires a residential asphalt shingle must have a minimum three-year-aged solar reflectance of 0.20, a minimum thermal emittance of 0.75 or a solar reflectance index of 16. The products come in a variety of colors in GAF's Timberline® Cool Series,® Timberline HD,® Timberline Ultra HD, Timberline American Harvest,® Timberline Natural Shadow® and Royal Sovereign.®

GAF also has announced it has renewed its partnership with Habitat for Humanity.® The company will provide roofing materials for a variety of Habitat for Humanity projects, and GAF Master Elite® and Certified™ Contractors will donate roof system installation services in their communities through March 2017.

Firestone employees receive award

Firestone Building Products Co. LLC, Indianapolis, has announced employees at its Youngwood, Pa., manufacturing facility were recognized for their efforts to improve a local park. The Youngwood facility received the Community Environmental Service Award from the Sewickley Creek Watershed Association, a group of citizens who promote conservation of natural resources in the area, for the work its employees completed in Lynch Field Park, Greensburg, Pa.

Employees helped regrade and stabilize stream banks; repair a jack dam; plant trees, shrubs and grass; and build an educational kiosk within the park. The improvements will help prevent flooding and make the park an educational and fun place for the local community.

In addition, Firestone Building Products has recognized 133 firms in the U.S., Canada and Mexico with a 2015 Partner in Quality Award. The award honors Firestone Building Products Red Shield™ Licensed Roofing Contractors who have delivered a high level of craftsmanship and superior roofing installations. To qualify, contractors must have installed a minimum of eight warranted roof systems in 2014; maintained at least 1 million square feet of Firestone Building Products roof systems under warranty; and achieved an annual Firestone Building Products Quality Incidence Rating of 1.25 or less. As part of the program, winners are eligible to receive a $1,000 annual credit to donate labor and materials to community roofing projects through the Firestone Building Products Community Service Program. DaVinci announces contest winner

DaVinci Roofscapes LLC, Lenexa, Kan., has named Rachel Delgado of Hampton, Va., the winner of DaVinci Roofscapes' 2015 "Shake it Up" Exterior Color Contest, a $2,500 cash grand prize.

More than 180 contestants posted digital photos of their homes' exteriors on the Today's Homeowner with Danny Lipford® website, www.todayshomeowner.com, along with 250-word descriptions explaining how they wished to "shake up" the exteriors of their houses. Delgado's entry explained how she wanted to break the mold of being a boring house in her neighborhood by painting the exterior of her home barn red with white trim and eventually adding a porch and new roof system.

Today's Homeowner with Danny Lipford radio show co-host Allen Lyle joined national color expert Kate Smith to judge the contest to determine the finalists, and the public voted for the winning entry; more than 600 votes were cast.

Petersen Aluminum releases EPD

Petersen Aluminum Corp., Elk Grove Village, Ill., has released an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the manufacturing, installation, maintenance and recycling of its roll-formed steel and aluminum roof and wall panels. The Roll-Formed Cladding, Aluminum Panels and Steel Panels EPD enables architects and builders to understand the full environmental impact of each product before making a selection. The EPD was prepared by Thinkstep and certified by UL Environment and is valid until March 2020.

Sika Sarnafil employee receives award

Sika Sarnafil Corp., Canton, Mass., has announced Joe Schwetz, director of technical service for Sika Sarnafil, has received ASTM International's Award of Merit for his contributions to the ASTM International Committee E60 on Sustainability. The award is given for distinguished service and outstanding leadership participation in consensus standards activities sponsored by ASTM International committees.

The ASTM International Award of Merit was established in 1949 and is the highest society award granted to an individual ASTM International member. The award was given to Schwetz in recognition of his leadership for completing a vegetative roof guide and promoting the work of ASTM Committee E60 to other technical committees.

Carlisle SynTec forms partnership

Carlisle SynTec Systems, Carlisle, Pa., has announced it has formed a strategic partnership with Columbia Green Technologies, Portland, Ore., a provider of green roof solutions. The partnership will provide customers with a single-source, warranted solution for vegetative roof systems.

EagleView Technologies CEO receives award

EagleView Technologies Inc., Bothell, Wash., has announced Chris Barrow, Eagleview Technologies' president and CEO, was named EY Entrepreneur of the Year® 2015 in the Pacific Northwest Region. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate excellence in areas such as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities. Barrow was honored with the award during a special gala event in Seattle June 5 and now is eligible for the Entrepreneur of the Year 2015 award, which will be announced Nov. 14, 2015.

Additionally, EagleView Technologies has announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Vista Equity Partners, a private equity firm focused on software, data and technology-enabled businesses. The acquisition will enable EagleView Technologies to enter a new phase of growth and create new product offerings. The transaction is expected to close later this year.

ABC Supply announces award recipient

ABC Supply Co. Inc., Beloit, Wis., has named Tom Wills, managing partner for ABC Supply's Wilkes-Barre, Pa., branch, the recipient of this year's Ken Hendricks Award.

The award is given annually to an employee who embodies the values championed by ABC Supply's co-founders Ken and Diane Hendricks. Wills, a 30-year veteran of the company, was recognized for his strong business and management skills and his ability to develop young associates into successful future managers.

A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply opens branch

A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply, Aurora, Ill., has opened a new distribution center in Hagerstown, Md. The facility increases A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply locations to 14 distribution centers that will better serve contractors across the U.S.

RCMA accepting abstract submissions

The Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA) has announced it is accepting abstract submissions for the 2016 International Roof Coatings Conference to be held July 18-21, 2016.

Abstract submissions are welcome from roofing industry professionals, building envelope technology or green building field experts, researchers and those in the architectural community. Possible presentation topics include global market developments; sustainability and green building practices; energy-cost savings evaluations; roof coatings formulation advancements; roof systems analysis; and accelerated aging.

Copper association announces awards

The Copper Development Association has announced the recipients of the 2015 North American Copper in Architecture Awards. The following NRCA members received awards for new construction: Gilbert & Becker Co. The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress has announced its 2015-16 Board of Trustees: Ken Farrish, president of Atlas Roofing Corp., Atlanta, has been elected president; James Patterson, senior vice president of procurement for CentiMark Corp., Canonsburg, Pa., has been elected vice president; Jim Barr, president of Barr Roofing, Abilene, Texas, is secretary-treasurer; and Bob Morgan, chief operating officer at Upstate Roofing and Painting Inc., Rochester, N.Y., is an NRCA vice chairman liaison.

In addition, The Alliance has announced the winners of its Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program for the 2015-16 academic year: Brittany Beldon, San Antonio, daughter of Brad Beldon, president and CEO of Beldon Roofing Co., San Antonio, has been awarded the Firestone Scholarship; Christian Cole, Dallas, Ga., son of Christie Cole, accountant at Ben Hill Roofing & Siding, Douglasville, Ga., has been awarded the Dan Cohen Scholarship; Jonah Manson, Solon, Iowa, son of Rodney Manson, president/owner of Tri-County Enterprises Inc., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, received a $5,000 scholarship; Ivy Rivas, Tujunga, Calif., daughter of Cruz Rivas, superintendent for Rey-Crest Roofing, Los Angeles, has been awarded the Fred Good Scholarship; and Adam Stackpole, Perry, Mich., son of Peter Stackpole, assistant director of accounting for Duro-Last Inc., Saginaw, Mich., received a $5,000 scholarship.

The Alliance also renewed five Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarships: Jaclyn Harris, Mooresville, Ind., who is attending Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., and was awarded the Firestone Scholarship; Shoshanna Lee, Livermore, Calif., who is attending California State University: East Bay, Hayward, Calif.; Josiah Martin, Richmond, Va., who is attending Christopher Newport University, Newport News, Va.; Dannelly McKenzie, Columbia, S.C., who is attending Clemson University, Clemson, S.C.; and Kara Sosinski, Hudson, Ohio, who is attending Ohio Northern University, Ada, Ohio.

The Alliance awarded $25,000 for scholarship renewals, and $25,000 were awarded in new scholarships for the 2015-16 school year. To date, 115 students have received $630,000 in scholarship awards.

Eligibility requirements and application guidelines for the 2016-17 Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship program will be available in September.

SPRI releases new bulletin

SPRI has released a new informational bulletin designed to update building code officials, specifiers, building owners and others in the roofing industry regarding code evaluations and product approval requirements for roofing products. Bulletin No. 1-15 focuses on the requirements of the international codes as they relate to membrane roof systems and addresses various ways roofing manufacturers can provide evidence of code compliance. NRLRC announces board of directors

The National Roofing Legal Resource Center (NRLRC) elected its 2015-16 officers and directors during NRCA's 128th Annual Convention Feb. 22-26 in New Orleans: J.J. Smithey, president and owner of Frost Roofing Inc., Wapakoneta, Ohio, has been elected president; Suzan Boyd, vice president of Academy Roofing Inc., Aurora, Colo., has been elected vice president; and Bob Morgan, chief operating officer of Upstate Roofing & Painting Inc., Rochester, N.Y., is immediate past president.

Honeywell has launched the Miller Fall Clearance App to help optimize worker safety when working at heights. The app can generate real-time critical fall clearance and swing fall calculations for self-retracting lifelines and shock-absorbing lanyards. It includes support in English, Spanish and French with metric conversion and allows users to email results. The app is available from the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Atlas Roofing Corp. has launched two new apps: the Atlas ProAPP™ and the Select Your Roof app. The Atlas ProAPP is a business management tool that enables contractors to set up new sales, manage marketing materials, track project progress and communicate directly with their teams. The Select Your Roof app is a visualization tool for homeowners and is intended for use with an iPad.® The app helps users find the perfect look for their homes by displaying a variety of shingle styles and colors as they are applied to one of the housing styles provided by the app or to an actual photo of a homeowner's house. Both apps are available from the Apple App Store.
