SPRI revises standard
SPRI has announced it is revising ANSI/SPRI FX-1, "Standard Field Test Procedure for Determining the Withdrawal Resistance of Roofing Fasteners." The association plans to canvass the document for re-approval as an American National Standard.
SPRI developed the standard to measure roofing fasteners' pullout resistance in field conditions. It obtains data used by roofing professionals to calculate the proper density and placement of roofing fasteners used in membrane roof systems. The standard also is used by roof system installers and inspectors as a quality control test to ensure sufficient pullout performance is achieved.
It first was approved in 1996 and revised and re-approved in 2001 and 2006 in accordance with ANSI's five-year renewal requirement.
Additionally, SPRI will be updating ANSI/SPRI WD-1 2008, "Wind Design Standard Practice for Roofing Assemblies," to reflect updates made to the recently published American Society of Civil Engineers 7-10 document, "Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures." Some revisions include new wind speed using a 700-year return, reinstating Exposure Category D for hurricane-prone coastlines and simplified procedures for determining wind pressures for buildings of all heights.

EnergyWise Roof Calculator Online has been updated
NRCA's EnergyWise Roof Calculator Online has been updated to include information from the 2010 version of ASHRAE 90.1, "Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings"; the 2009 version of ASHRAE 189.1, "Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings"; and the 2006 and 2009 versions of the International Code Council's International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).
EnergyWise Roof Calculator Online is available for free at www.nrca.net and offers an interactive graphic method of constructing virtual roof assemblies to evaluate thermal efficiency. The application denotes minimum thermal insulation requirements established by ASHRAE Standard 90.1, ASHRAE Standard 189.1 and the IECC. EnergyWise users also can determine whether a vapor retarder's placement is effective.
EnergyWise Roof Calculator Online is a user-friendly application that prompts users to enter specific roof assembly information, such as roof area, climatic region, heating appliance type and cost, roof openings and roofing materials to be used. Users then can generate a report summarizing the proposed roof assembly design, estimated heating and cooling costs, and minimum thermal requirements.
