CertainTeed releases fifth webisode

CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, Pa., has released its fifth webisode, "Maximum Definition with Landmark™ PRO," in the Living Spaces® Exterior Home Makeover series.

The series features the Pohl family of Pewamo, Mich.—the grand prize winner of CertainTeed's $75,000 Exterior Living Spaces Home Makeover contest—as their home gets remodeled. The fifth webisode shows the process of removing and installing Landmark PRO roofing shingles. Also, a new music video, "Only Landmark Will Do," accompanies the webisode.

The webisode and music video are available at CertainTeed's Living Spaces Facebook page, www.facebook.com/certainteedlivingspaces, or YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/ctlivingspaces.

Additionally, CertainTeed has announced Jonesburg, Mo., as the location for its new asphalt roofing shingle manufacturing and distribution facility. The company plans to invest $100 million in the facility, which will create 100 new, permanent, local jobs in the Jonesburg community during the next few years.

The facility will include a 60,000-square-foot manufacturing facility that will produce CertainTeed's Landmark roofing shingles and a 150,000-square-foot warehouse that will serve as a Midwest distribution site.

IKO presents award

IKO, Kankakee, Ill., has presented its Standard of Excellence Award to LaValley-Middleton Building Supply Inc., Newport, N.H., which has served homeowners and contractors since 1962 in various cities in New Hampshire and Vermont.

IKO's Standard of Excellence Award recognizes the company's stocking distributors that go above and beyond to support IKO's products and programs. LaValley-Middleton Building Supply is the first peak performer to receive the honor.

GAF expands program

GAF, Wayne, N.J., has expanded its WellRoof® Plus Program. Through the program, GAF will contribute up to $500 toward an initial roof system inspection by a GAF-certified maintenance professional on roof systems greater than 100 squares. By establishing an annual preventative maintenance program, commercial property owners qualify for a 25 percent extension on their Diamond Pledge™ NDL Roof Guarantees at no additional cost.

Property owners with a GAF roof system and Diamond Pledge NDL Roof Guarantee only need to notify their certified maintenance professional that they are interested in establishing an annual preventative maintenance program and schedule their first roof system inspection.

SRS Distribution opens new locations

SRS Distribution Inc., McKinney, Texas, has opened two locations: one in Lakewood, N.J., under the Pace Supply name, and one in Norcross, Ga., under the Atlanta Roofing Supply name. Both locations will carry a full line of residential and commercial roofing products.

Pace Supply will serve the central New Jersey market from south of metropolitan New York to north of Atlantic City, N.J.

Atlanta Roofing Supply in Norcross will serve the northeast portion of the Atlanta metropolitan market along the I-85 corridor.

ABC Supply acquires company

ABC Supply Co. Inc., Beloit, Wis., has acquired all of Lee Wholesale Supply Inc.'s assets. Lee Wholesale Supply is a distributor specializing in steep-slope roofing, siding and windows with locations in Livonia, Mich.; Macomb, Mich.; New Hudson, Mich.; and Port Huron, Mich.

Lee Wholesale Supply complements ABC Supply's existing locations in Southfield, Mich.; Taylor, Mich.; and Warren, Mich., bringing the total number of locations that serve contractors in the Detroit market to seven.

Additionally, in April, ABC Supply opened a branch in Jackson, Miss. The new location will carry shingles and related roofing supplies for professional contractors, and ABC Supply plans to add more products in the future.

Former executive director passes away

Thomas S. Gunning Jr., former executive director of the North/East Roofing Contractors Association (NERCA) and the Building Trades Employers' Association, passed away April 4. Gunning graduated from Bentley College, Waltham, Mass., and was a World War II Army veteran.

Gunning served as chairman and board member of Mt. Washington Bank, South Boston, Mass. He was a founding member of Laborers & Carpenters Unions Training Funds, a trustee of multiple Building Trades Benefit Funds, a 40-year Milton Town Assessor and Town Meeting member, a past president and founding member of Milton Residence for the Elderly, an incorporator of Milton Hospital, and past president and founding member of Milton Merchants.

Gunning also was the recipient of The Labor Guild of Boston's Cushing-Gavin Award, Israel Bonds' Peace Medal, The Construction Institute's Volpe-Eagan Award, NERCA's Clarence J. Carr Award and other industry recognitions.

Gunning was preceded in death by his wife, Gracemarie, and brother, James. He is survived by his wife, Helen; children and stepchildren, K. Jane, Thomas, Patricia, Carole, Patricia, Thomas, Elaine, Janet, Michael and Brian; 31 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Industry leader passes away

Morton Sherman, longtime member of ASTM International, passed away Feb. 9. Sherman was born in Chicago and moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1967. He graduated from Crane Technical High School, Chicago, and Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, and was a U.S. Navy Veteran.

Sherman worked as a chemical engineer for Zonolite® attic insulation, Celotex insulation and Jim Walter Research Corp., now known as the Center for Applied Engineering, St. Petersburg. He also later founded his own engineering consulting firm. Sherman served as a St. Petersburg community organizer, establishing and leading the Crossroads Area Neighborhood Association, and was a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Pinellas County Metropolitan Planning Organization and B'nai Israel.

Sherman is survived by his wife, Beverly; children, Janet, Nancy and Alan; nine grandchildren; and his siblings, Dot and Herb.

RCMA announces awards recipients

The Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA) announced the recipients of its Industry Statesman Award and Martin A. Davis Industry Leadership Award during its annual meeting held March 13 in Orlando, Fla.

RCMA presented William "Skip" Leonard, consultant for El Segundo, Calif.-based Henry Co., with the Industry Statesman Award.

The Industry Statesman Award recognizes special efforts made on behalf of RCMA in advancing the roof coatings industry. Recipients are honored for outstanding interest and activism in promoting the roof coatings industry and exemplary efforts to achieve significant advancements through the implementation of new technical programming, regulatory or governmental affairs incentives, research activities, technical publications, and RCMA and industry involvement.

Leonard is a member of the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, RCI Inc. and Reflective Roof Coatings Institute. He also received RCMA's 2010 Martin A. Davis Industry Leadership Award. Before working for Henry, Leonard served as regional commercial sales manager for TAMKO® Building Products, Joplin, Mo., and sales manager for Gulf States Asphalt Co. Inc., South Houston, Texas, and GS® Roofing Products Co. Inc., Irving, Texas. He currently serves as RCMA vice president.

RCMA also presented Richard Zegelbone, president of Tropical Roofing Products, Hallandale, Fla., with the 2012 Martin A. Davis Industry Leadership Award.

The Martin A. Davis Industry Leadership Award, which is named for the late Martin A. Davis, one of RCMA's founding members, is presented annually to an individual selected by his or her peers who has exemplified outstanding service and made significant contributions to the roof coatings industry.

Zegelbone is the 29th recipient of the Martin A. Davis Industry Leadership Award. He has been an RCMA member since the association's inception and has held a variety of RCMA board seats and served as the association's treasurer, vice president and president.

Additionally, RCMA, in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn., is accepting presenter submissions for its 2014 International Roof Coatings Conference, which will be held July 14-17, 2014, in Baltimore.

Educational topics should be of key interest to roofing contractors, architects, roof consultants, building owners and facility managers, manufacturers, regulators, building science professionals, researchers, sustainable building experts from around the world, and the roof coatings community.

ICC makes codes available on website

The International Code Council (ICC) is collaborating with key standards developers and organizations, such as ASTM International, to make the construction industry standards referenced in the 2012 International Codes® available to the building industry on ICC's website, www.iccsafe.org.

The most recent series of standards from ASTM International now available in ICC's digital standards library includes more than 440 standards and five comprehensive collections pertaining to the 2012 codes, including ASTM Standards: As Referenced in the 2012 International Codes; ASTM Standards: As Referenced in the 2012 IBC® & IRC®; ASTM Standards: As Referenced in the 2012 IBC & IFC®; and ASTM Standards: As Referenced in the 2012 IBC.

RISE™ is accepting exam applications

Roof Integrated Solar Energy™ (RISE) Inc. is accepting applications for the Certified Solar Roofing Professional™ (CSRP™) exam being held Sept. 12.

The CSRP designation is a voluntary certification for professionals who plan and oversee the installation of roof-mounted photovoltaic (PV) systems. The credential evaluates whether candidates have the underlying knowledge required to successfully install roof-mounted PV systems.

The application deadline for the Sept. 12 exam is Aug. 12. Applications are available at www.riseprofessional.org/roofing-application.shtml.

The Alliance's Helping Our Own is accepting donations

The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress is seeking donations to its Helping Our Own program, which provides financial need and other assistance to victims and families experiencing life-altering events, such as the Boston Marathon bombing in April.

The Helping Our Own program funds are available to eligible families and individuals in need of financial assistance to help with medical bills, prosthetic limbs, remodeling costs to make homes handicapped accessible, and more. When adequate funds have been raised, the Alliance will provide grants to eligible individuals, including victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, in accordance with the Helping Our Own program's nomination, selection and distribution process.

The center announces program fees

The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing has announced new updates to the RoofPoint™ program and online application, as well as project fees.

To continue providing new online features and to support continual maintenance of the program, submissions for RoofPoint-registered projects now will require a fee of $250 per project. Discounted fees are available for center members.

The center has made available an electronic media kit to all RoofPoint-registered projects, and participants will be able to order professionally printed project certificates.
