GAF acquires shingle facility
Wayne, N.J.-based GAF Materials Corp. acquired Meridian, Miss.-based Atlas Roofing Corp.'s Quakertown, Pa., manufacturing facility on May 7.
"This acquisition will enable us to keep pace with the growing demand for our product in North American markets," says William Collins, GAF's president and chief executive officer. "The Quakertown facility provides GAF with immediate capacity of roughly 2 million squares (18 million m²) of shingles per year and the potential for additional capacity expansion, as well as saturated felt products to help contractors and distributors build their businesses in the United States and Canada."
Elk opens new facility
Dallas-based Elk Premium Building Products has begun operations at a new 415,000-square-foot (38554-m²) asphalt roofing products manufacturing facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Manufacturing the Prestique® line of laminated shingles and employing up to 125 people, the $75 million plant is expected to have an annual economic impact of more than $75 million for the area. The company decided on Tuscaloosa as a plant location because of its supply of raw materials and labor, a pool of skilled employees and its position near the center of Elk Premium Building Products' southeastern market.

Member helps ENERGY STAR®
NRCA member Bennett & Brosseau Roofing Inc., Romeoville, Ill. will partner with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's and Department of Energy's ENERGY STAR program to promote energy efficiency.
The company will educate clients with regard to energy-management practices and technologies, including strategies, products and application technologies that could incorporate green building design.

MBMA presents safety awards
The Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) has announced the winners of its 2003 Safety Awards. The program rewards exceptional safety efforts in the metal building and metal roofing manufacturing industries. MBMA uses Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines to score the companies, and eligible candidates have to submit data on all employees who spend at least half their time working on the plant floor.
This year's winners are Spirco Manufacturing, Memphis, Tenn., for the Overall MBMA Safety Award, and American Buildings Co., Eufala, Ala., in the Individual Plant Location category for its LaCrosse, Va. facility. Honorable Certificates were awarded to the following: American Buildings Co.; Butler Manufacturing Co., Kansas City, Mo., for its Birmingham, Ala., location; Ceco Building Systems, Columbus, Miss., and Rocky Mount, N.C.; Nucor Building Systems, Charlotte, N.C., for its Swansea, S.C., location; Spirco Manufacturing; and VP Buildings Inc., Memphis, Tenn., for its Evansville, Wis., Pine Bluff, Ark., and Rainsville, Ala., locations.

In addition, SPRI has announced plans to hold a canvass of its new adhesive pull-test procedure to gain approval of the procedure as a standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). SPRI has worked with ANSI as an accredited canvasser and will submit copies of its adhesive pull-test to roofing professionals for review. SPRI's test method, "Standard Field Test Procedure for Determining the Load Resistance of Insulation Adhesives over Various Substrates," is meant to evaluate insulation adhesives and their suitability for attaching cover board or insulation to a substrate.
