NERCA foundation receives pledge

The North/East Roofing Educational Foundation (NEREF), a nonprofit corporation affiliated with the North/East Roofing Contractors Association (NERCA), received a $50,000 pledge from Firestone Building Products Co., Carmel, Ind., and Admiral Building Products Inc., Wilmington, Mass. The companies each will donate $25,000 during the next five years to NEREF's scholarship program.

"Our foundation will have added stability, and these funds will allow us to expand the scholarship program that we offer to our members' employees and families," says NEREF Chairman Paul Cappello, president of C & C Cornice Co. Inc., Newton, Mass.

Rep. Velázquez is Woman of the Year

On April 3, Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-N.Y.) was named Woman of the Year by Hispanic Business magazine at a luncheon on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Velázquez is the first recipient of the award and among the magazine's 2003 "80 Elite Hispanic Women" list.

"I am honored to receive this award," Velázquez says. "In Congress, it is so important to me that the voice of small business, including minority-owned businesses, is heard. They are the backbone of the U.S. economy, and women, especially Latinas, are opening businesses in record numbers. There still is much work to be done, but I know they are our future and will continue to fight for them."

In 1992, Velázquez became the first Puerto Rican woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Later, she was appointed Ranking Democrat of the House Small Business Committee making her the first Hispanic woman to chair a House committee. Under her leadership, the committee passed 20 pieces of legislation that became law. Velázquez also helped establish the U.S. Small Business Administration Women's Procurement Program. The program helps women-owned businesses win federal contracts.

In addition, Velázquez was instrumental in publicizing the NRCA Pentagon Project. After meeting with NRCA representatives, she asked her public-relations staff to help NRCA illustrate the small-business community's efforts to rebuild the nation after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Velázquez participated in a ceremony June 25, 2002, to recognize those who contributed labor, materials and money to the NRCA Pentagon Project.

NRCA member receives recognition

Kingsport, Tenn.-based LaFerney Inc. was named Contractor of the Year by Duro-Last® Roofing Inc., Saginaw, Mich. LaFerney Inc. received the recognition for having the highest sales among Duro-Last's authorized contractors during 2002.

The company also received Duro-Last Roofing's Golden Eagle Award for having sales of more than $2 million during 2002 and John R. Burt Award for having sales of more than $1 million during 1999, 2000 and 2001.

"Winning an award named after the founder of Duro-Last Roofing [and] the Golden Eagle Award and earning the title of Contractor of the Year is the ultimate Duro-Last Roofing honor," says Don LaFerney Jr., president of LaFerney Inc.

Copper Sales signs agreement

NRCA member Copper Sales Manufacturing Co., Minneapolis, has entered into a distribution agreement with Metal Roof Innovations Ltd., Colorado Springs, Colo. According to the agreement's terms, Copper Sales Manufacturing will distribute Metal Roof Innovations' S-5!™ snow-retention systems to all its retail customers, contractors and distributors.

Garland product wins awards

Cleveland-based The Garland Co. Inc.'s StressPly® EUV Mineral with Starburst™ Mineral Surfacing has won a silver-level 2002 Product of the Year Award from Plant Engineering magazine. The product also won the 2002 Editor's Choice Award from Buildings magazine and 2002 Bronze Product of the Year Award from Plant Services and MRO Marketplace magazine.

To be considered for the awards, StressPly EUV Mineral with Starburst Mineral Surfacing was required to meet criteria regarding its description, benefits and implications. Garland also had to explain how the product works and why it believes the product is superior to other membrane roof systems. The contests were judged by outside agencies and the publications' editors.

Stevens Roofing awards contractors

Stevens Roofing Systems, Holyoke, Mass., has named 99 Authorized Stevens Applicators winners of its 2002 Alliance Program. Applicators won by earning Alliance Award points for workmanship quality, job documentation, promotional and sales aggressiveness, and volume of Stevens Roofing Systems'' products purchased. The number of points accumulated determines the award level; award levels include Alliance, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus (from lowest to highest achievable level).

NRCA member D.C. Taylor Co., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, earned the highest award—the Platinum Plus Award—for the sixth consecutive year for earning about 3 million Alliance Award points. In addition, NRCA members Palmetto State Roofing & Sheet Metal Co. Inc., Greenville, S.C., and Seamless Systems Inc., Memphis, Tenn., were named Platinum Award winners.

Versico awards Contractors

Versico Inc., Akron, Ohio, has named 52 of its Authorized Versico Roofing Contractors winners of its 2002 Excalibur Award. Contractors receive the awards by earning points for completed jobs and quality ratings based on an inspection program. Winners are awarded with benefits according to the number of consecutive years they have been part of the Excalibur program.

Notably, NRCA members Buttweiler's Do-All Inc., Alexandria, Minn.; Northern Cedar Service Co. Inc., Mason City, Iowa; and Royal Roofing Co. Inc., Orion, Mich., were named Excalibur Award winners for the 14th consecutive year.

GAF Materials earns energy label

GAF Materials Corp., Wayne, N.J., has received the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) ENERGY STAR® label for its white Sovereign® Series three-tab shingles and Timberline® Series laminate shingles.

To qualify for the ENERGY STAR label, which promotes household and commercial building products that save energy and money, a roofing product must meet DOE and EPA criteria for reflectivity and reliability.

Tremco expands business

Tremco Inc., Beachwood, Ohio, has purchased Koch Waterproofing Solutions Inc., Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Koch Waterproofing Solutions, which provides waterproofing solutions for residential new construction, now operates as part of Tremco's Sealant/Weatherproofing Division. According to Tremco representatives, no employee or facility changes will occur.

CertainTeed signs energy partnership

Valley Forge, Pa.-based CertainTeed Corp.'s Insulation Group has signed the ENERGY STAR® Residential Insulation Partnership Agreement. The agreement allows CertainTeed to work closely with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to promote cost-effective, energy-efficient improvements to houses through the ENERGY STAR Home Sealing program.

As part of the partnership, CertainTeed will use the ENERGY STAR insulation product graphic on its products' packaging and Home Sealing marketing graphic on its educational materials and Web site. CertainTeed's employees also will incorporate energy-efficient processes in facilities and business processes by purchasing ENERGY STAR-rated products.

Malarkey opens production plant

Portland, Ore.-based Malarkey Roofing Products opened a production plant in South Gate, Calif. The facility produces rolled roofing products and is expected to produce built-up roofing products, shingles and SBS-modified bitumen products. The plant distributes products to the Southwest.



Up the ladder

Buck Westbrook has been hired as national sales manager for Metal Sales Manufacturing Corp.

Johns Manville Roofing Systems Group has appointed Donald Ambrose Eastern region sales manager.

Malarkey Roofing Products has named Mark Clifton northern California sales manager and Andy Pocock southern California sales manager. Dale Cisco and Bud Granger were named sales representatives for southern California and the Bay Area, respectively. In addition, Herbert Malarkey was named business manager and Rudy Penalosa was named plant manager for the South Gate, Calif., production facility. Glen Hurtado and Lora Richardson were hired as a technical services support member and customer service manager, respectively.

Michael McAuley was named general manager of Versico Inc.



Standards news

Stapler standard is revised

The American National Standard Institute has revised its safety standard for staplers and air nailers, which affects those tools' actuation systems. The new standard, ANSI SNT-101-2002, which was effective May 1, reflects developments in actuation systems' design, use and sale and specifies wording and symbols for tool safety labels.

According to the International Staple, Nail and Tool Association (ISANTA), the standard will require most tools be equipped with sequential actuation systems and the ability to convert to contact actuation systems. SPRI revises wind standard

SPRI has revised ANSI/SPRI RP-4-2002, "Wind Design Standard for Ballasted Single-Ply Roofing Systems." The standard, which is required to be revised every five years, was developed to give building code organizations a basis to inspect and approve ballasted flexible membrane roof systems.

INSPEC hosts students

As part of a job-shadowing program, INSPEC Inc., Minneapolis, hosted 20 Minneapolis-based North Community High School students who are taking computer-aided drafting and design classes.

The students toured the company's facility and visited stations that described roof system design processes, digital photography, infrared technology, construction materials and engineering software. The students also met with Dwight Benoy, INSPEC's president, and received advice about résumé writing and structural engineering information.

INSPEC's job-shadowing program helps students realize the importance of design professionals in the construction industry and opportunities available to them.
