OMG acquired the Asheville, N.C.-based edge metal business from the W.P. Hickman Company in 2013. OMG EdgeSystems operated as a business unit under the company’s OMG Roofing Products Division. Advanced Roofing helps elderly resident

Advanced Roofing and other local businesses and nonprofits helped repair Gloria Mugford’s home.

Advanced Roofing Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., helped rally a southern Florida community to repair the home of 87-year-old Pompano Beach resident Gloria Mugford.

After being contacted by Mugford’s neighbor, Dick Spalding, Advanced Roofing President and CEO Rob Kornahrens knew he wanted to help with house repairs while Mugford recovered from a broken shoulder in the hospital. Her roof had holes that went untended for decades. Mold covered the walls inside the house, furniture was drenched and garbage bins were set up to catch some of the water.

Advanced Roofing and a coalition of local business owners and nonprofits pitched in to completely transform Mugford’s home during a span of six weeks. A new roof system was installed, plumbing was replaced and mold was removed. In total, Kornahrens estimates more than $100,000 went toward home improvements.

Kornahrens says he was happy to help Mugford during a year that turned the world upside down.

“People kept pitching in,” Kornahrens says. “It’s just truly amazing what we’ve done in six weeks.”

Mugford was touched and grateful when she returned to her repaired home.

“She kept saying ‘I have to pinch myself, I have to pinch myself,’” Spalding says.

SPRI reviewing two standards

The Single Ply Roofing Industry has announced it is reviewing two documents for reapproval as American National Standards.

First published in 1996, ANSI/SPRI FX-1, “Standard Field Test Procedure for Determining the Withdrawal Resistance of Roofing Fasteners,” helps measure the pullout resistance of roofing fasteners in field conditions. In accordance with ANSI requirements, the standard is recanvassed every five years and was last updated and approved in 2016.

Likewise, ANSI/SPRI GT-1, “Test Standard for Gutter Systems,” is being reviewed and prepared for canvass. ANSI/SPRI GT-1 provides designers, contractors, consultants and building code officials with structural design for gutters used with low-slope roofing. This standard was first developed as GD-1, “Structural Design Standard for Gutter Systems Used with Low-Slope Roofs,” in 2010.

It was revised and approved as test procedure GT-1 in 2016 and is included in the International Building Code.®

Industry professionals who would like to participate in the canvass process should contact SPRI at info@spri.org.
