RCMA holds annual conference
The Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA) elected its 2003 officers during its Annual Conference & EXPO held in Marco Island, Fla. Raymond T. Hyer III, vice president of sales and marketing for Gardner-Gibson Inc., Tampa, Fla., was re-elected president.
Other officers elected include the following: vice president of long-range planningVan Ripps, president of Palmer Asphalt Co. Inc., Bayonne, N.J.; vice president of member servicesRichard Paradise, vice president and general manager of Imperbel America Corp., Kansas City, Kan.; and secretary-treasurerStephen Hudak, president of KST Coatings Manufacturing Inc., Twinsburg, Ohio.
In addition, RCMA granted Adrian Berger, vice president of Seaboard Asphalt Products Co., Baltimore, its Martin A. Davis RCMA Industry Leadership Award. The award annually is given to an individual who significantly has contributed to the roof coatings industry. Berger has been involved with the industry for 20 years and RCMA since 1982.
Also during the conference, Paul A. Beemer, director of legal and technical affairs for Henry Co., Huntington Park, Calif., received RCMA's Industry Statesman Award. The award is given when considered appropriate by RCMA members. Winners must promote and advance the roof coatings industry through technical programs, regulatory affairs, research and publications. Beemer is a long-time RCMA member and has been involved with the industry's technical and government affairs issues.
Carlisle SynTec wins architecture award
Carlisle, Pa.-based Carlisle SynTec Inc. has won a 2002 Architect's Choice for Excellence Award from Architecture magazine.
The magazine inserted ballots in its April 2002, May 2002 and June 2002 issues allowing readers to choose award-winning manufacturers that provide durable products and commitment to manufacturer services, value and design.
Carlisle SynTec ranked first in the Best Membrane Manufacturer category. A list of winners is published in Architecture's December 2002 issue and on its Web site, www.architecturemag.com.
Primus-Sievert changes name
Loves Park, Ill.-based Primus-Sievert Inc. has changed its name to Sievert Industries Inc. The name change occurred as a result of the sale of the company's Primus division in August 2002.
Sievert Industries manufactures open-flame torches, electronic hot-air welders, gas hot-air welders, soldering irons and accessories.

Garlock Equipment Co. has promoted Brad Dunn to vice president of sales and marketing.
Joseph A. Hayek was appointed director of regional sales for Urecoats Industries Inc.

China experiences urban migration
China currently is experiencing its greatest urban migration in history. During the past decade, more than 100 million Chinese left poverty-stricken rural areas for cities and manufacturing zones to find work in various industries, including roofing. The United Nations expects 200 million more Chinese to move to urban areas this decade, and the Asian Development Bank predicts China will boom to 1.4 billion residents by 2010 with 300 million more urban residents.
If these projections hold, more housing, schools and hospitals will be needed to meet demands, potentially keeping roofing contracting companies busy for many years.
NRCA is prepared to help China's roofing contractors meet these demands through its partnership with the China National Waterproofing Building Materials Industry Association. The groups co-sponsored the First China International Exhibition for Building Waterproofing Technology in 2002 in Beijing. NRCA plans to co-sponsor the 2004 event, which again will be held in Beijing.

Petersen Aluminum Corp., Elk Grove Village, Ill., has become a licensed distributor of S-5!™ ColorGard™ snow-retention systems, which are manufactured by Metal Roof Innovations Ltd., Colorado Springs, Colo.
ABC Supply Co. expands business
Beloit, Wis.-based ABC Supply Co. has purchased 29 distribution centers from Greenville, S.C.-based Cameron Ashley Building Products Inc. The centers, which are located in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, Mountain and Western regions, distribute roofing, siding and exterior building products to professional contractors. According to company representatives, the centers have merged into 16 stores and most employees remained.
Four distributors form company
NRCA member Lucas Sales Inc., St. Louis; Architectural Consultants Inc., Edina, Minn.; Midwest Distribution Alliance Inc., Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Weather-Tek Building Products Inc., Brookfield, Wis., have merged to form Group4 Materials Inc., Brookfield. Each company will become a distinct sales unit and keep its current employees. Jim Miller, Weather-Tek Building Products' president, has been elected Group4 Materials' chief executive officer.
Bradco Supply buys company
Bradco Supply Corp., Avenel, N.J., has purchased West Palm Beach, Fla.-based East Coast Supply. East Coast Supply's four offices in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Orlando, Fla.; Tavares, Fla.; and West Palm Beach will operate as East Coast Supply.
In addition, Bradco Supply opened a roofing materials warehouse in Punta Gorda, Fla. The company now operates 102 locations in 25 states.

NRCA member is company of the year
Hammond, Ind.-based Rogers Roofing was named company of the year by Ardmore, Pa.-based Certified Contractors Network (CCN), an organization dedicated to developing professional business practices for its international contractor members.
To be considered for the award, Rogers Roofing had to meet specific criteria, including increased sales growth during the past year, an excellent safety record, positive company image, active participation in CCN meetings and training conferences, as well as others.

ASA launches payment campaign
The American Subcontractors Association (ASA) Inc. has designated 2003 Payment Advocacy Year (PAY!). The PAY! campaign will teach subcontractors how to cope with and eliminate payment problems, as well as help enact new policies and legislation about payment issues. During 2003, ASA is distributing a monthly newsletter and posting information on its Web site, www.asaonline.com/pay.htm, about payment topics, such as pay-if-paid clauses, change orders, lien law, payment bonds and other issues.
