GAF receives award

GAF, Wayne, N.J., has received Architectural Products magazine's Product Innovation Award (PIA) for its EverGuard Extreme™ TPO. The PIAs recognize products, materials and systems innovation that lead commercial and institutional design to new heights. A panel of 44 architects and specification experts who focus on product assessment evaluated the entries to select a winner. Decisions were based on attributes, qualities, functionality and/or performance beyond industry standards.

Also, GAF has selected three winners to receive Ford® F-150 pickup trucks as part of its 125th Anniversary Sweepstakes. Patrick Jolitz, president of Superior Construction Inc., Prior Lake, Minn.; Jaye Schwartz, owner and president of NRCA member Avondale Roofing Inc., Northbrook, Ill.; and Maria Linzie, former office manager of High Point Roofing LLC, Steamboat Springs, Colo., each received a Ford truck.

The contest was open to all professional roofing contractors or builders/remodelers in the U.S. and ran from July 6 to Aug. 31, 2011.

Additionally, GAF donated roofing materials to a Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County, Mo., project. The home is located in the Enclaves at Eisenhower, St. Peters, Mo.

Duro-Last® Roofing secures distribution services

Duro-Last Roofing Inc., Saginaw, Mich., has secured Franklin, Mass.-based Barrett Distribution Center's services. Many standard Duro-Last Roofing products and accessories now are available at Barrett Distribution Center's facility for immediate delivery to or pickup by authorized Duro-Last Roofing contractors.

The Barrett Distribution Center is intended to serve authorized contractors in New England, northern New Jersey, eastern New York state, northeastern Pennsylvania and the New York City metropolitan area.

Lapolla Industries contributes to project

Lapolla Industries Inc., Houston, has announced its spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation systems contributed to the energy efficiency and improved occupant comfort of an "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" project for Staff Sgt. Allen Hill and his family in Ottawa, Kan. The episode aired Nov. 4, 2011, on the ABC television network.

The project's main focus was to reduce sound transmission into the home and provide overall energy savings. Hill suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, and loud sounds negatively affect him. A Lapolla Industries certified contractor applied the company's AirTight™ OC (open-cell) SPF insulation.

OMG founder passes away

Arthur "Art" Jacobson, founder of Olympic Fasteners (Olympic Manufacturing Group), Agawam, Mass., now OMG Inc., Agawam, passed away Oct. 28, 2011.

Jacobson sold the first Olympic fastener in 1981. He saw the need for long roofing screws in the marketplace that eventually led him to begin a fastener manufacturing company in 1984. Under Jacobson's leadership, Olympic Fasteners developed into the largest roofing fastener manufacturer in the U.S. Jacobson sold Olympic Fasteners in 1994 but remained in the area and began a successful new business venture, Oasis Shower Doors, Agawam, nine years ago. Jacobson is survived by his wife, Esther; daughter, Judy; and grandsons, Evan and Gabriel.

New Tech Machinery enters partnership

New Tech Machinery Corp., Denver, and The Bradbury Group, Moundridge, Kan., have entered a strategic partnership.

New Tech Machinery now will distribute The Bradbury Group Australia's Half Round Gutter Machine and The Bradbury Group's Long Bed Folders and other related metal working and handling products. The Bradbury Group now will distribute New Tech Machinery's entire line of portable roll-forming equipment and accessories internationally and in the U.S.

Drexel Metals acquires Metal-Fab Manufacturing

Drexel Metals Inc., Ivyland, Pa., has acquired NRCA member Metal-Fab Manufacturing LLC, Jessup, Md. Metal-Fab Manufacturing offers a complete line of metal roofing and architectural sheet-metal products that include 42 engineered metal roof assemblies, radius metal roofing products, batten systems, flush wall and soffit systems, custom cornice and historic trim fabrication, engineered perimeter edge systems and column covers.

Metal-Fab Manufacturing also is part of Moon Township, Pa.-based CENTRIA's dealer network and will continue to serve the Maryland area as a supplier of CENTRIA architectural systems.

Evergreen Slate donates to museum

Evergreen Slate Co. Inc., Granville, N.Y., has presented an unsolicited gift of $1,000 to Slate Valley Museum, Granville, to help the museum recover from significant damage incurred when Hurricane Irene passed through New York in 2011.

Evergreen Slate's president, Fred Whitridge, and corporate secretary, Bob Jenks, presented the company's gift to Kate Weller, Slate Valley Museum's director.

Weller expressed gratitude to Evergreen Slate on behalf of Slate Valley Museum and said the support by Evergreen Slate will help the museum continue to move forward in its restoration efforts.

Tremco introduces sustainable packaging

Tremco Roofing and Building Maintenance, Beachwood, Ohio, now wraps its Premium III and Premium IV Pak-Free Asphalt in meltable polyurethane. The new packaging benefits contractors and building owners by reducing trash on job sites, as well as reducing the amount of labor involved in handling asphalt.

In addition, a compatible odor neutralizer is blended into each melt pack, minimizing the asphalt smell to reduce possible disruption to building occupants during a roofing project that uses hot-melt asphalt.

Commercial Roofers receives award

Commercial Roofers Inc., Las Vegas, has been honored with the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America's Corporate Citizen Award through AGC's Skill, Integrity and Responsibility Awards.

The award recognizes a company's commitment to providing a nurturing, employee-focused work environment, including innovative benefits and incentive programs, while exhibiting a concern for its clients and the community through charitable works, fair dealings, environmental stewardship and community involvement.

Earlier in 2011, Commercial Roofers donated time and resources and coordinated efforts with other trades to reroof and rehabilitate an elderly military veteran's home in the Las Vegas Valley. Commercial Roofers'

Sales Administrator Michelle Shetrom oversaw the efforts for the company and coordinated with other businesses in town to donate time and money.

Commercial Roofers also has been a long-time scholarship donor to University of Nevada, Las Vegas' School of Architecture. Since the 1990s, the company has awarded $1,000 scholarships each year for roof system design contest winners in the program's construction materials class. Commercial Roofers' owners Dennis Conway and Scott Howard agreed to another 10 years of donations and increased the annual scholarship amount to $1,500.

Olneya Restoration Group receives award

Olneya Restoration Group LLC, St. Louis, received the 2011 Corporate Commitment

Award through the Maryland Heights Chamber of Commerce's Business Leader of the Year Awards.

The award recipient has top-level company commitment to improving its corporate climate demonstrated through its policy and goals. Each awarded company possesses the qualities of innovation, drive and team spirit combined with a determined will to succeed while never forgetting the importance of supporting the community by helping others.

Olneya Restoration Group consistently has given back to its local community. After the tornado in Joplin, Mo., the company reached out and donated thousands of dollars to the tornado relief fund, as well as a new roof to a Joplin family in need of help.

Additionally, Olneya Restoration Group partnered with Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County, Mo., to donate the labor for a roof on a home located in the Enclaves at Eisenhower, a 14-home lot development in St. Peters, Mo.

Olneya Restoration Group sent a crew to the location to complete the job and donated all labor for the project at no cost to Habitat for Humanity. The home's total construction was finished at the end of 2011.

Green roof award winners announced

Green Roofs for Healthy Cities has announced the winners of its 2011 Green Roof and Wall Awards of Excellence. Award winners demonstrate the universal acceptance of green roofs and walls as an important green infrastructure tool in North America with dozens of multifaceted, highly visible projects.

Ten Eyck Landscape Architects Inc., Austin, Texas, received the Green Wall Award for its work on the Phoenix Convention Center; Brooklyn Grange, New York, won in the Green Roof—Intensive Industrial/ Commercial category for work on its rooftop farm; PLANT Architect Inc., Toronto, and Perkins+Will Canada, Toronto, won in the Green Roof—Extensive Institutional category for its work on Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto; Hadj Design, Bothell, Wash., won in the Green Roof—Extensive Residential category for its work on Hood Canal, a private residence, Quilcene, Wash.; Kelco Landscaping and Construction Inc., Commack, N.Y., won in the Green Roof—Intensive Institutional category for its work on High Line, New York; Durante Kreuk Ltd., Vancouver, British Columbia, won in the Green Roof—Intensive Residential category for its work on Millennium Village, Vancouver; Habitat Gardens, Pacific Grove, Calif., won in the Green Roof—Extensive Industrial/Commercial category for its work on the EcoCenter, San Francisco; and Paul Murdoch Architects, Beverly Hills, Calif., won in the Green Roof—Special Recognition category for its work on Central Avenue Constituent Services Center, Los Angeles.

The awards were presented at CitiesAlive: 9th Annual Green Roof and Wall Conference, which was held Nov. 30 to Dec. 3, 2011, in Philadelphia.

SPF guidance video available

The Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI) of the American Chemistry Council has released a new video, "Working Safely with Low-Pressure Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation," for professional installers to illustrate good safety practices for low-pressure, two-component spray polyurethane foam (SPF) application. It is available at CPI's SPF Health and Safety website, www.spraypolyurethane.org.

The video includes information about the chemicals used to make SPF, personal protective equipment, appropriate places to install SPF, job-site preparation, cleanup and safety practices. The video complements CPI's high-pressure SPF health and safety training program.

In addition, CPI recently updated its Fire Safety Guidance: Working with Polyurethane Foam Products During New Construction, Retrofit and Repair document, which is available in the Free Resources section of CPI's website, www.polyurethane.org. The document focuses on safety precautions during hot work at construction sites.
