CertainTeed receives energy award

Valley Forge, Pa.-based CertainTeed Corp. received the 2002 Star of Energy Efficiency Award from the Alliance to Save Energy, a coalition of public and private business leaders that promotes worldwide efficient and clean energy use through research, education, pilot projects and policy advocacy.

CertainTeed received the award for its energy-saving efforts, including its Certified Contractor Program, a partnership with the National Association of Home Builders that tests insulation to ensure houses' thermal integrities, and Certified Plus Home Program, which offers builders an approach to energy efficiency from pre-groundbreaking to project completion, as well as other energy programs with which the company is involved.

Johns Manville converts plant

Denver-based Johns Manville converted its Jacksonville, Fla., polyisocyanurate insulation manufacturing facility to produce a polyisocyanurate insulation product with pentane, a nonozone-depleting blowing agent. The plant was converted to comply with the Jan. 1, 2003, deadline to phase out hydrochlorofluorocarbon.

In addition, the company's Roofing Systems Group adopted long-term thermal resistance (LTTR) as its exclusive R-value measurement for polyisocyanurate insulation. The U.S. LTTR transition date is Jan. 1, 2003.

Honeywell phases out HCFC-141b

Honeywell's Fluorine Products Business, Cary, N.C., has opened a Geismar, La.-based Enovate™ 3000 blowing-agent production facility to comply with the Jan. 1, 2003, deadline to phase out hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC-141b). The facility is said to produce enough blowing agent to meet global demands. Enovate 3000 reportedly is nonflammable and will not deplete the ozone.

KRATON™ Polymers increases production

Houston-based KRATON Polymers has increased its KRATON® G polymers production capabilities by nearly 20 percent at its Belpre, Ohio, and Berre, France, plants. The production surge is in response to increased demand for polymers in construction projects and adhesive, compound and footwear manufacturing.

Henry employee passes away

Walt Mullen Jr., a commercial roofing marketing manager for Garland, Texas-based Henry Co.'s Kimberton, Pa., facility, passed away Sept. 13. Mullen was 49.

Mullen began his career as a roofing worker during college. He then worked as a commercial roofing marketing manager for Tampa, Fla.-based Celotex Corp. before acquiring the same position at Henry where he worked for 14 years.

Mullen is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughters, Michelle and Maura; and son, Matthew.

RollCOM receives Energy Star® label

Frankfort, Ky.-based RollCOM has received the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Energy Star label for its SDP 200 Series and SDP 300 structural standing-seam metal roof panels, ADP 100 Series architectural design panels, 2.67 corrugated exposed fastener, R panel, 7.2 Rib and Shallow Rib.

To qualify for the label, a roofing product must meet DOE and EPA criteria for reflectivity and reliability. The Energy Star label promotes household and commercial building products that save energy and money.

MetalForming named exclusive distributor

MetalForming Inc., Peachtree City, Ga., was named exclusive distributor for FORSTNER GmbH, Feldkirch, Austria. MetalForming will distribute the company's architectural sheet-metal coil-processing systems throughout the United States and Canada.

Up the Ladder

Tremco Inc. has promoted Deryl W. Kratzer to president of its Roofing and Building Maintenance Division and Randall J. Korach to president of its Sealant/Weatherproofing Division.

Mike Thompson was hired as a project manager for the Repair and Restoration Group of Facility Engineering Associates P.C.
