As I was saying …

Securing our future

For too long, the roofing industry has been lamenting its lack of qualified workers—not only field workers but estimators, project managers and others who will be the roofing contractors of the future.

There are no simple methods for attracting great people to a great industry. However, I can't think of a better way to start than to be sure those people who have an interest in our industry have every opportunity to receive a first-rate education.

That's why it is encouraging and heartwarming to let you know about the industry's newest initiative, the establishment of the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program. This new program will be managed by The Roofing Industry Alliance for Progress, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that includes members from all roofing industry segments.

The Alliance's leadership not only established the program but is funding it, as well, with an initial $400,000, another $250,000 over five years and $25,000 per year in perpetuity. Other commitments—including $250,000 from Firestone Building Products Co. LLC, Indianapolis—leave the new program with $1.2 million already committed.

The program's goal is to establish a permanent endowment fund of at least $2 million, which will allow the Alliance to award about 20 $5,000 scholarships every year. That level of funding can make a real difference—to students and the roofing industry. Scholarships will be awarded to postsecondary school students who are coming from the roofing industry.

The new program was created, in part, to recognize an industry leader who has committed a large part of his life to furthering education. Kruger was the leading force behind the creation of the Roofing Industry Educational Institute, has served as the Alliance's principal fundraiser, has served on Georgia's education commission and has worked tirelessly on behalf of Georgia universities.

Creating this new program sends a powerful, compelling message: This is an industry that cares about its future and wants to help deserving students have a real chance at success.

Please consider making a gift. Any and all amounts are welcome, of course. Commitments can be made over a five-year period, and for those who commit a minimum of $100,000 over five years, the Alliance has created the opportunity for named scholarships. Marla Ramos, the Alliance's coordinator, has more information. You can reach her at mramos@nrca.net or (800) 323-9545, ext. 7539.

This is the right cause at the right time, and it honors the right person. I can't think of a better way to help secure our industry's future.

Bill Good is NRCA's executive vice president.
