Close-up

Carrier Hawaii, an HVAC distribution company, built a new facility in Kapolei, Hawaii, in 2010 to accommodate its growing operations. To reduce its energy costs, Carrier Hawaii installed a photovoltaic (PV) system on the facility's new roof system. Commercial Roofing & Waterproofing Hawaii Inc., Honolulu, and GreenPath Technologies Inc., Honolulu, partnered to install the systems. The PV system, which consists of 510 Sharp® NU-U235F1 solar modules mounted on about 11,074 square feet of new TPO roof membrane, provides a 119.85-kilowatt (kW) DC output. It uses a SunLink® racking system connected to a 100-kW AC Satcon® PowerGate® Plus Inverter and online data monitoring system. The PV system is estimated to generate about 188,804 kilowatt-hours of electricity during its first year, offsetting about 65 percent of the building's annual electricity consumption. The TPO roof membrane and PV system are estimated to save $8,022 per year in energy costs.
